This week #MerlotThursday is a nice surprise. A unique Merlot blend from Napa Valley.

A pretty color of dark ruby with a nice reddish rim.

Fruity nose of cherries, plums, red currants, oak, smoke, vegetables, vanilla, spices, dark coffee, pencil lead, earth, licorice, graphite, bitter herbs and minerals.

Medium plus in body with medium plus acidity and long legs.

Dry on the palate with plums, cherries, blueberries, wood, cloves, spices, vegetables, tobacco, peppercorn and espresso.

Medium plus on the finish with fine grained tannins and tangy cranberries.

This 6 year old Merlot/ Sangiovese blend is very tasty. Nice and engaging with nice acidity. Showing nice complexity with a nice mouthfeel. Tangy and rich.

A good food wine and good by itself as well. Needs a couple of hours to open up properly. Would benefit from another few years in the bottle.

I paired it with cheeses and light appetizers.

A blend of 50% Merlot and 50% Sangiovese.

14.5% alcohol by volume.

90 points.

$30.

Sadly, there's just not enough fruit from the Merlot to balance out the leanness and acidity of the Sangiovese. This was a bit of a disappointment.
