Drank 4/3/15 held up surprisingly well. Little closed a first. Blackberry, French/us oak, peach blossom core, med complexity, m+ length.

Apr 6th, 2015Moms out - kids and me for dinner - steak, salad, risotto and found this in the cellar - why not and what a gem - worried I had let it go too long but no, lots of complex structure - smooth, earth balanced by berry and tobacco flavors - very nice - a gift from a great friend on my 40th - thanks brother!

Mar 27th, 2019Would not be confused for its Northern Rhone complement. Lots of fresh ripe fruit and heat even with 13 years of age.
Drinking well with some Waygu strip steaks and bok choy.

Feb 13th, 2015Continuing in the tradition of quality D'Arenberg's the Laughing Magpie is showing very well for a 10 year old wine. Deep color typical of McClaren Vale, there are layers of fruit with the Viognier showing through to lift the Syrah out of brooding. This lacks the typical bacon fat, landing more on a brighter Aussie Shiraz. But this is a wine to drink now or later. Preferably on its own or with a very nice blue cheese. Big, but refined tannins with enough fruit to pop a poor Francophile in the mouth but enough sophistication to soothe him/her afterwards.
