Finally, wine week! A classic Aussie Shiraz to kick it off. Dried out cork was a worrying start, but the liquid that poured out quickly put that to rest. Deep red with the lightest orange rim. The nose was hedonistic - ripe blackfruits with a touch of vanilla. Fruit was little more dried out on the palate, but exceedingly sweet (too sweet even!). Leathery, smoke, cocoa nibs, tabacco, oak spice. Tannins have mellowed out. It's soft for sure, but there's a surprisingly present acidity, perhaps a little VA - all good to balance that fruit sweetness. I wouldn't say this is a wine I enjoy drinking, but I certainly appreciate the structure, balance, and youthfulness of sorts.
