Show stopper. This was up there for WOTN. Absolutely stellar in the glass...mocha, cocoa, toasted oak, blackberries on the nose. Incredibly smooth front and mid palate that was full of blue, black and red fruits. Plum, cassis and peppercorn on the finish. Just beginning to hit a prime drinking window!

99' Chappellet Pritchard Hill Estate

Color- A mix of purple & dark ruby red, that lightened considerably as it gets closer to the edge.

Palate-Dark berries, chocolate, olives, cedar, oak . Light acid & soft tannins. Slowly dying. Drink them up.

I opened this 99 many years ago. Thinking it needed a bit of time. It was tight, tannic. Not anymore. Cheers.

This wine is such a perfect compliment to my ribeye and mushrooms. I recall buying some of these '04s at the winery and we opened one in their picnic area surrounded by huge boulders. We brought some burgers from Taylor's Refresher (now Gott's) and enjoyed them on a perfect day. The winery family dog joined us. A big white/yellow lab. A memorable day. Ridiculously delicious burger. That bottle was tight as fu%* but now it's in an absolutely outstanding spot. Very typical ripe Pritchard Hill style but not over-ripe at all. No heat. Leather, dark chocolate and youthful but polished tannins. A little oak on the finish but not distracting in any way. I have to say the '04s and '06s I've had in the last year are distinctly superior to the more vaunted '05 and '07 Napa vintages....at least to my taste.

20 years in the making, and still, it's breathtaking.
Lovely notes of ripe cherries, sage and tobacco fill the glass. On the palette, you could be forgiven for thinking that you're drinking an aged Pauillac. Judicious oak treatment blends perfectly with intense blackcurrants, caramel, graphite and coffee. Beautifully weighted and balanced. This still has loads of runway ahead of it. In my mind, this wine represents first-growth quality in Cali.

I consider this a "first growth" in Cali, and after tasting this near 20 year old example, the evidence is palpable.
The nose shows a touch of gray, but visually, the wine has stood relatively firm. On the palette, it has shed its plump mouthfeel and presents an ethereal weight and texture. Fruit is still vibrant with black cherries and raspberries. A touch of cinnamon and barrel toast complete the ensemble. Don't leave this 97 any longer. Excellence in a glass.

Killer wine! Great weight on the palate and layer upon layer of complexity. Silky tannins serve to wrap everything together.

Easily mistaken for a much younger cab. Very tight at first. Opens up into dark currant, toasted maple after 2 hours in decanter.
