Burgess Cellars has been making overlooked (undeservedly) Cabernet on Howell Mountain since 1972. Their vineyards appear to fall just under the Howell Mountain AVA elevation requirements, so the front label can only say Napa, but there's no question, this is Howell Mountain juice. I'm embarrassed to say this is actually my first Burgess... and after an hour, my embarrassment turns to regret. Black currant, cassis, cocoa powder, espresso, and cedar make an excellent case for distinction. The secondary black tea, underbrush, menthol, and bing cherry offer confirmation of its deserved status.

Part 2 of 3 from a tasting with Burgess Cellars.
-On the nose, dark fruit...smells of cocoa powder.
-Even for its young age, this tastes really well now. Couple more years away will do wonders, but AGalloni already gave this Howell Mountain cab a 93...

Deep rich plummy nose w some charcoal and graphite notes. Palate is a little oak heavy & grabby but will probably smooth out

Not bad, but lacked character. Too much oak and seemed over-manufactured. Chocolate was very present. Could probably use some aging. Unfortunately these $40-$60 Napa Cabs just don’t measure up to equally priced French wines.

Softened tannins, dark fruit (plums, blackberries), a hint of spice.

Jammy goodness! Blackberry pie and cassis. Raspberry preserves and a@little smoke. Soft but intense. Really nice with grilled pork chops

Shay @Shay Aldriedge I listen to you because I believe. So thank you. Bought this on your review. And enjoyed. Young yes but really smooth cab. Nice, black cherries, some pepper and spices.
