When you open a under $40 Napa cab that’s well past it’s drinking window on paper, but it blows your socks off!

Beautiful dark berries, chocolate, and tobacco.

Burgess Cellars has been making overlooked (undeservedly) Cabernet on Howell Mountain since 1972. Their vineyards appear to fall just under the Howell Mountain AVA elevation requirements, so the front label can only say Napa, but there's no question, this is Howell Mountain juice. I'm embarrassed to say this is actually my first Burgess... and after an hour, my embarrassment turns to regret. Black currant, cassis, cocoa powder, espresso, and cedar make an excellent case for distinction. The secondary black tea, underbrush, menthol, and bing cherry offer confirmation of its deserved status.

This wine needs to breathe for 45 mins or more. It's dry and tastes like the alcohol content is high, but we liked this wine with a hearty ribeye. It's not a last bottle of the evening, but not a bad pick by Charlie. Our first attempt was after a meal and it was just too much alcohol.

Finally opening some of these that I've been buying. Wound pretty tight and could go a few more years easily. Opened up after about an hour. Not a big fruit Napa cab, a more reserved style.
