Adras Ribeira Sacra Mencia

Really fun to drink. Body of a Cabernet Franc but with sweet fruit and savory herbs (not green). Yum.

This wine wallops your nose with black cherry and a quarry full of crushed stones. Almost smells like I would imagine a Mencia grown in Saint-Joseph. Very zingy in the mouth, with little tannin but good acids and tons of stony minerality. Actually played very nicely, with a very slight chill, off my pasta with garden pesto, French beans, and new potatoes. Might be a little too simple on its own tho.

I was curious about wine made of Mencía. Adrás made good Godello--I bought that bottle for the same reason: grape curiousity. This one is not as interesting as the Godello. It is quite bright and acidic, full of red cherries and pomegranate. The oak tannin is not quite integrated but supplies some texture. I wouldn't get this one again I don't think but still want to try more wines made if Mencía.

Unexciting.

Not a good wine to drink by itself. Like a smoky, dusty cru Beaujolais. Nose is bubble gum with smoke and dust. Went well with a variety of foods. I'm reserving judgment.
