Monthly WTF wine group night. Our theme was American oak vs French oak. All wines tasted blind. We started off with two bottles of bubbly and finished with two non-themed reds.

Jammy! It actually smelled carbonic? Surprising. Dark and baked fruit without being dense with rich meats/bacon at the finish. I guessed this as Cali Syrah with French oak. Thanks

Really tight when I opened it, two days later it is kicking my ancient ass.

The 2016 Syrah Colson Canyon Vineyard is bold, racy and exuberant and yet also has plenty of structural underpinnings as well. The Colson Canyon Syrah is a stylish wine. Like all of Tensley's wines, the Colson Canyon is quite intense. In 2016, that manifests itself in slight but perceptible sweetness. This is the first vintage farmed by Tensley following his acquisition of the vineyard. (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, September 2018)

amazing dark fruit with heavy ripe plum on the pallet with heavy smoky meat, a slight crack peppery finish. very smooth and long finish, one of the best Syrahs.

Day two: really impressed with the balance of pepper, mineral, black fruits, acidity, and tannins. Knockout stuff.

Menthol, violets, black pepper. But turns a little sour quickly on the palate. Not much in the nose initially, but after an hour or so I noticed crème de menthe. Not sure what made the good folks at WS decide this was the 25th best wine of 2018 when there have got to 60 plus better Syrah released from northern Rhône vineyards.

Hrm. Typically Tensley in style. I found this quite unidimensional and boring despite the critical reviews. I was hoping for better.

Dark near purple, big black blue bomb of syrah. Dirty diaper/blueberry nose. A little fizz on the palate. Lots of fruit forward. If not for the sugar on the attack, I would give this a 93. I definitely want to try their other wines.
