Part 6, day 2. No notes. A bigger Rioja expression than Rioja Alta drunk earlier, & better

A lovely bold wine. Rich with tannin and older cherry fruit. Nose is a hint of cedar and a tobacco smoke finish. Very distinct finish with a hint of bitterness. Hits the tongue with a dried fruit berry finish which is long lasting.

Dark ruby in color with a wide brick/ reddish rim.

Great nose of black currants, sweet cherries, blueberries, wood, cloves, vanilla, espresso, cola, light vegetables, tobacco leaf, cumin, saffron, graphite, herbs, Indian spices, earth and dark chocolates.

Medium bodied with medium plus acidity.

Dry on the palate with currants, cherries, sweet raspberries, tobacco, oak, spices, earth, dark chocolates, graphite, peppercorn and leather.

Medium finish with fine grained tannins and tangy cranberries.

This is a delicious 14 year old Rioja Gran Reserva. Drinking very nicely now, but still a little hot at the back of the throat. Tangy and soft with great complexity especially on the nose.

Needs 2 hours open up, and even better after 3 hours.

A nice wine to pair with food, but definitely good by itself too. Loved smelling on it for a long time.

Thank you Scott for sharing this with me. Really enjoyed it.

Robert Parker 96 points. Wine Spectator 92 points.

I paired it with a charcuterie board of meats and cheeses.

A blend of 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacha and 10% Mazuelo and Graciano.

14% alcohol by volume.

93 points.

$75.

A well put together Rioja. Everything working in harmony and was an exceptional accompaniment to the food at Espana.

After some heavy drinking of Cab, in particular Napa cab, it was great to go back to the old world and taste one of the more iconic Rioja.
I had this about 4 years ago, and don’t think much has changed. Fruit was restrained but still vibrant, along with herbs, cedar, caramel, and developing tertiary notes of prune, fungus, and slight hint of port. The palate is still a bit on the acrid side, yet broad and round. Tannins still has some grips.
Regal. And a long life ahead!

Had this a year ago and kept another bottle in my cellar. Ruby with ripe blk/red fruits, herbs and spice. This 4 grape blend was aged for 3 years in oak and another 3 years in the bottle before release, Wow! On the complex palate ripe cherry, blackberries and ample dried fruits, well integrated oak and acidity with pepper, tobacco, toast and vanilla. The finish was smooth with fine tannins and mineral notes, complex, lingering ending with earthy tones. Outstanding!
