The Octogan is the flagship wine of the well respected winery Barboursville Vineyards in Virginia, South near Charlottesville.
One of the most coveted red wines from Virginia, this is in the upper echelon of quality.
Finesse and old world charm are what define this wines style, with a restrained set of fruit aromas, some earth tones of soil dust. The palate is medium to medium + bodied and the structure is fine and elegant.with good acids.

Young and promising. Well ripened red and black fruits, charcoal, dense velvety tannins, good acidity. Opens nicely with an overnight decant in the bottle, best to hold.

Smoky currant aroma. Cherry, tobacco, mild on the palate. Dry tannic finish. Tobacco. Raisin, Parmesan flavors. Still a bit young.

Second bottle of this wine a year later. You definitely need to decant her. Once again, good concentrated fragrant nose and plenty of it. Silky taste with dark fruits and refined yet still powerful tannins. Aftertaste of some more minerals I didn’t catch 1 year ago. Cheers.

Virginia Bordeaux blend? Yes, Virginia! Barboursville 's premier effort, it shines with sweet black fruits.

Been ordering for years. Tonight’s impression. Balance of creamy & spicy. Buttercream sprinkled with pepper. Really like the Jeffersonian inspired architectural label.

Very burgundy like color with emphasis on hazy ruby note. Nose is very fragrant, such that you can smell it from meters away. Ripe plum and raisin mixed with ample cedar wood, peaty/roasted meat, grassy herbs, milk chocolate, and spiced oak fill your nasal cavity within no time. Round but firm alcohol surfaces on the 2nd wave. Taste comes in multi mode. Bright acidity hits you first, with firm tannins wrapped in beautiful oaky note comes next. Then the condensed sugar note from raisin and cherry show up nicely. Then the herby note and a tiny touch of bittersweetness surface. Meaty and chewy. Aftertaste of hotness in your throats, firm tannins, condensed sugar and subtle oak note, medium long. I have a strong feeling this wine can age well. Very glad I stock up some in advance.

Still too young. I love it and wouldve given higher score if I didnt have 09. But this one has lots of potential! Look forward to how it turns out.

Confounds in plain sight. At once elegant AF, but extraordinarily rough around some edges. Savory, deep-blue, and obsessively balanced.
