The glass of 2014 Caymus I had was undrinkable. Thick and sweet. Maybe there was something wrong with the bottle.

One of many Caymus family wines I had the pleasure to try while running our Live Stream event with Chuck and his kiddos. This vintage I'll have to say was better than the 41st anniversary. The nose was inviting, lacking any herbaceous or green bell pepper nuances, only notes of raisin, cocoa powder, sweet cherries, vanilla bean extract, red plum, and red delicious apple skins. The liquid is dark purple in the glass with medium long legs and slow moving. The pallet exhibited notes of dried dates, stewed blackberries, milk chocolate, cinnamon, and a very smooth finish, leaving a sweet, chocolatey coating to the pallet.
Overall, I understand why people love this wine due to its ability to be consumed so young, and still age a little. But, the real reason that the Cab is so approachable is due to its lack in tannin structure. Also, they wait past harvest several weeks to obtain optimum ripeness, which gives it a bit of a raisin like quality similarly found in late harvest reds, so it has a sweet characteristic comparably to most Cabs. I will say my final conclusion is that I did thoroughly enjoy this wine, and it was delicious. If I had several of these, I could easily make it daily red (completely discounting cost). It is a comfort wine to just be enjoyed, but maybe just not at its lofty price range for many people. Great effort Caymus, I do look forward to my visit to the estate in August!

Jumped the gun tonight, just bought my 1st bottle YUP of Caymus 2014 Napa Cab Sauv! Why had to try it. See my picture above, we decanted it to a Water Pitcher for maximum breathing. Waited 30 minutes and gave the sniff test. Nose of jammy black fruits. Trying my first sip, still a little hot. Waited an tried again, sweet vanilla oak on palate, good acid on tongue (yep), starting to open. Nicely balanced with soft tannin structure, rich fruit. Needs a good 2-3 hours next time! I give this a solid 95! Why? It reminds me of the 2012. The 2013 needed 6 hours and was still tight. 2012 vs 2014 very close in all the above statements. Bravo. Paid 64.98 plus tax at WineWorks in Marlton NJ Tonight. Yes I know I had to experience this with family right away. CB 95.. Let me know your thoughts. PS: needs to be served at 55-60 degrees in temperature. Really Good!!

Last wine for our wine pairing at Chef's Table this evening, paired with a prime beef tenderloin with morel mushrooms and a smoked garlic-potato puree.
Deep purplish ruby red. Layered nose with boysenberry jam, tons of spices, cinnamon and violets. Medium plus tannins (6.5/10) and medium plus bodied. Lacks a little oomph in the mid palate. Notes of blackberries, blackberries, vanilla and caramel. Long finish. Drink till 2026.
