While I’ve been a big fan of Chapoutier’s other bottlings, this is my first experience with the Sizeranne. This is a selection of fruit from Méal, Bessards and Greffieux.

At almost 11yrs old, I wasn’t sure if this needed some time to blow off funk or not, so I consumed from bottle and opted not to decant, which I think worked well. The aromatics here totally stole the show…there was a roasted plum combo with savory tomato stew type notes that were so unique…a rollercoaster balance of dark fruit and tart/herbal flair. Palate was as expected with red and and black currant, mocha dusted black cherries, tart iron and black pepper. Really pretty highlight of iron all the way through but not to where it dominated everything. The tart fruit and tangy/savory iron play was right up my alley. This seems to be in a prime drinking window and likely hangs here the next 5-7yrs.

Was lucky enough to try again. History of Chapoutier family dates back to the early 19th century when current owner Michel Chapoutier’s great-, great-, great-grandfather Marius purchased estate & famous l’Hermitage vineyards. Aromas of rich red fruits and elegant spice. On the palate raspberry, cherry & currant flavors with notes of floral and oak. Firm tight Rustic tannins that ease up a bit with time, well balanced ending with spice and cedar. Very nice! Tasting Sample. Has lots of room to bottle evolve.

Black olive, black pepper, blackberry, black raspberry, hints of menthol... dark on the nose. Smooth, dark berry forest fruit, acidity drives a sultry finish.

120 a bottle...about enough said. The Syrah was the way it should be...take note Australia. The lower rating represents the unacceptable price point.
