We’ll call it hi-toned, floral and a bit textured. Was this the first year of the Cask 23?

Tasted with Stag’s Leap head winemaker Marcus Notaro. Deep ruby, the 2016 Cask 23 Cabernet Sauvignon reveals pure aromas of blackcurrant, blackberries, black plums, dried herbs, wet tea leaf, wood smoke, dark chocolate and roasted almonds. Full bodied with ripe, fine grained tannins and good acidity, this is a bold wine, built like a brick wall. Enjoy it now or until 2050.

1997 vintage and it was so lively but balanced. Perfect combo of earthiness, fruit and an incredible balance of soft tannins. Incredible. Could also see it going for another 5-10 years.

Sorry Mr. Parker, but I disagree with your opinion about this wine. This is a quite wonderful bottle of wine. Dark black fruits, leather, tobacco, smoke, and elegance. The quintessential expression of the iron fist in the velvet glove. The finish last more than a minute. I wish we had more bottles of this beauty. Yum!!

Happy birthday red wine!! Bold black and red berry flavors, leather, eucalyptus, smokey, balanced, soft tannins working in harmony with the chalky mid palate, rising toward a powerful crisp finish of lip smacking goodness. This wine coats your mouth on the way down begging for another sip. It’s difficult to go slow and savor when the flavors are this elegant and lovely. Still my favorite domestic wine.

We just enjoyed the 1995 vintage in 2017 and it had aged beautifully. It opened up nicely after decanting and was filled with berries.

The prototypical iron fist in the velvet glove. Wonderful aromatics soft tannins expressive mid palate of currants licorice leather tobacco dark berries. Still vibrant and expressive for an aged wine. This is why Cask 23 is my favorite domestic wine. BRAVO!

The 98 vintage was panned but we have enjoyed many of them. This one did not disappoint. Decanted and drank.
