Bodegas Montecillo was founded by Celestino Navajas in La Rioja Alta. A solid Rioja, deep red with ripe berry fruit and spicy aromas. On the palate strawberry and cherry flavors with cedar, vanilla and sweet notes. Tannins are firm with nice mouthfeel, medium ending with a ripe fruit structure. Nice value. Tasting Sample.

Given I paid less than $1 for each year of age quite pleased. A fine, aged Rioja.

Cinnamon, dusty, cherry, lovely earth aroma with sandalwood. Med tannins. Aged in neutral French oak.

Smells sort if smokey. Tastes really young. Acidic.

Better than the current 2007 Reserva if you ask me, though more rustic and muddled, with solid black cherry fruit and leather. Despite the indiscriminate grape selection of the crianza, the French oak makes it a serviceable bottle.

87% Tempranillo and Garnacha 13%.
Aged in American Oak Barrels 18 months. Nose is tame with stone fruits. Taste is clean cherries, oak, pepper, leather. Dry finish, but leaves tannins on the tongue. Pretty decent stuff for less than $10. Happy Valentine’s Day!
