We drank this 3 months ago - absolutely no change. At $60 this is a criminal value as it presents at twice the price.

Heady cocktail of crème de cassis combines with ripe blueberries and coffee notes. Palate is a stunner with bold-textured tannins. It displays breadth and depth with a royal structure. Overall, this is young and precocious, finishing sweet. Drink over the next 5 to 15 years, it’s that strong. This isn’t the flagship wine, either!

Last night we had opened the 2019 Lewelling Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon. Napa Valley - St. Helena, California.

On the nose there is black cherry, blackberry, blueberry, black currant, eucalyptus, chocolate, bell pepper, violet and earth.

On the palate there is black cherry, blackberry, plum, black pepper, black currant, herbaceous notes, violet, mint, mocha, cedar and dark earth.

This wine is a full bodied wine with medium + acidity and medium + fine sandpaper tannins that has a long black fruit pencil shavings finish. A beautiful wine that goes well on a cold evening. Enjoy the weekend and please stay safe and healthy. Nostrovia! 🍷🍷🍷🍷

Last night I opened the 2018 Lewelling Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon. This is a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from St. Helena Napa Valley California.

On the nose is black cherry, plum, blackberry, black and red currant, bell pepper, mint and pencil lead.

On the palate there is sweet black cherry, bkackberry, black plum, black currant, vanilla, chocolate, spice, cedar, pencil shavings and wet gravel.

This is a gorgeous full bodied wine witha smooth sumptuous mouthfeel medium + acidity and medium + sandy tannins that leads into a long dark fruit wet gravel finish. What a wonderful weekend. I hope everyone is having the same. Please stay safe and healthy and a continued wonderful weekend. Nostrovia! 🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷

Very impressive, and because of the quality of the vintage, I guessed correctly this time. The quality is synonymous with the Wight Vineyard cab. Bold, sweet and textured. Syrup de cassis plays off sandalwood and bright acidity. This deserves cellaring, as it’s going to further improve.

This family did things in the right order. They were farmers before they made wine. The expression says, “ you can’t make great wine without great fruit.”

The first thing I would say about this 2007 is, it’s really good but, if you have this 2007 you should wait another 7-10 years for it best self. I decanted it 2 1/2 hours and it’s still a beast. Lots of primary going on here.

In ten years, this wine has a shot at 97-99. Their 2007 was just that strong as it was with much of the rest of the Napa Valley.

The nose reveals ripe, ruby & creamy fruits of; black cherries, black raspberries, black raspberries, cooked/stewed strawberries & black plum, raspberries, purple fruit blend, pomegranate with blue fruits hovering the edges of the glass. Black licorice, dark fruit cola, understated smoked meats, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla & notes of clove, caramel, light sage, limestone, dark, rich, moist earth, moist clay, limestone, dry, crushed rock powder, black olive, fig with candied; blue fruits & field of violets.

The body is; round, lush & full. Still has meaty, tarry, teethe tannins that still show some astringency. This bottle properly stored has another 20 years of good drinking ahead of it. For those that like that older, brickier side of wine perhaps another 7-10 years. It’s in its early side of gorgeous headed to Marilyn Monroe. Black licorice, dark fruit cola, understated smoked meats, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla & notes of clove, salted caramel, black tea, dry herbs with sage dominance, dark spice with pronounced heat, powdered limestone, dark, rich, moist earth, moist clay, limestone, dry, crushed rock powder, dry tobacco, dry underbrush & twig, graphite, black olive, peppery characteristics with candied; blue fruits & field of violets. The acidity is round and full...almost holds the slightly elevated alcohol heat. The finish is big; tarry, meaty tannins, ripe fruit at the mid point with a long dark, earthy spice on the long set.

Photos of; one of Lewelling’s vineyards, family member & Vineyard Manager-Doug Wight, Cabernet fruit just harvested from the Wight Vineyard & old farm/winery building.

Sipping Fine Wine

Established in 1864 near the western foothills in St. Helena by pioneer winegrower and horticulturalist John Lewelling. Deep Ruby with aromas of blue and black fruits, sweet spice and leathery notes. On the palate blackberry & cherry, bits of cacao and cinnamon, soft with fine tannins. Long finish ending with oaky notes. Was tight at tasting but opened up, decant. Tasting Sample.
