Alsheimer Spätburgunder

Gorgeous nose of dust, sour cherry, early season cherry and a hint of morello cherry. Lovely and utterly classic. Really the most Burgundian Jewel nose ever. Palate is silky and elegant and the fruit is earthy and sweet but only barely sweet. Very juicy, refined and lithe. Long finish. Needs to open but just so classic.

This is drinking very well with an exuberant nose of violets, deep cherry fruit, tremendous spice and just so wide yet contained. Really impressive. Age has really opened this up. Lots of Xmas spice. Plate is soft, seductive, sweet and juicy but has really nice precision and freshness. Insane linearity. So Germanic. Nose starts to develop orange rind as the palate silkens up and gets sweeter but turns austere and sweet/sour at the end. Terrific persistence. Now as it airs it gets so elegant and sappy and the structure picks up.

Light frame, transparent ruby in the glass. Very delicate on the palate. Then it starts with the most elegant early summer floral aromas, roses and just-ripe tart cherry fruits. The more air this gets, the more density it gains. Always remaining weightless, it grows into a crescendo of angular acids and crystalline minerals, and texture coming up to full volume. A stream of tart, cool red fruits. That Rheinhessen terroir tho! Got better over three days. Could be a 9.5 in a year or two.

Red forest berries and a flit of clove and allspice on the nose. Beautiful transparent red and purple fruit with some savory barley on the palate. Elegant. Minerals and minty bitterness on the finish. Just a bit angular in places now but on night two this is delicious and already much smoother.

Stunning nose. She nailed this vintage. Gorgeous berries. Alluring and complex. Some earth and mineral. All red fruits, and crazy florals. So high toned. But also deep and lush. Palate is fresh, energetic with great sweetness and finishes very mineral. Lovely length. So ethereal and delicate but has an extra oomph from 2018. Really fresh and tangy. So scary juicy and gluggable.

Much better than yesterday. Wow, so lithe, juicy and transparent. Extraordinary minerality. So clean, what energy. 9.2 to 9.3.

With significantly lower yields in 2017 this is a hard to get item. Gorgeous, subtle and super pure nose. Cranberry, pomegranate, so clean, bing cherries that are so so bright. Glorious spice. So so glorious. Like a feather it is just the purest, sweetest, most elegant, nimble like Red Rieslingesque Spätburgunder ive ever had from Jewel. Amazing freshness, drive and energy and also a firm mineral backbone and core. So delicate and nimble. Wonderful purity. The mineral red fruited sweetness is hey gorgeous. Tannins are delicate but there. I see this aging very well for 6-8 years. Gorgeous wine.

Brambly beautiful nose. Big florals, big berry, big cherry, all being damson and brambly. Palate is lithe and elegant with beautiful fruit and such elegant tannins and wonderful freshness and purity. Terrific inner mouth aromas, superb.

Nose has diffuse florals, freshly cut cherry, pint of raspberries... initially this doesn't seem as fragrant/approachable as the 2015, likely more decant time is needed.

Palate has mashed raspberry/strawberry/blackberry, moist earth, wet granite, perfect (medium) acidity and a very long finish.

Looking ahead to this bottles evolution over the next 24hr as it seems lightly closed up tonight. Notes will be updated.

24hr Update: Nose is approaching the Pinot perfume qualities of the 2015, but lacking the body of that vintage.

Gorgeous nose. Spice, balsam, Damp earth, pine needle, raspberry and strawberry fruit. So aromatic. Layered and precise aromas. Excellent aromatic showing. Palate is ripe and juicy with wonderful balancing acidity and freshness. Lovely earthy sweetness and nice persistence. Gossamer like.
