2013 benevolent neglect Syrah. - one of my favorite wines of the tasting- great balance, varietal character, and vineyard expression .. Well done #lasmadresluncheon

Second vintage of the Las Madres Syrah from Benevolent Neglect Wines. Deep and dark ruby red with a purplish hue. Love the attack of the nose. Coated with iron and gamey notes. Nose started to mellow out with some more complex notes of limestone, and spiced or curried veggies. Definitely felt like a top tier Northern Rhone-style Syrah. Slight minerality and olives on the palate. Smooth and rounded with some savory elements. Moderate tannins (6.5/10) and medium plus body. Some woody textures in the finish, long and lingers. Just keeps getting more complex as it breathes. Expect this to get even better with age but drinking deliciously right now. Drink till 2026.

Not a shining star for me, considering all of the hype behind this bottling. A bit opulent, ALL black fruited, certainly some nice old world tones with black olive, a bit of meat, some hints of complexity; but linear, certainly not an expressive example. Not what I feel Syrah should be but let’s hope it’s an open door toward Syrah for new world wine lovers of other varieties.

With thanks to @Henrik Poulsen who continued to espouse the greatness of these wines. Almost as good as @Mike Smith , which I would suggest is a high compliment.
