Covert Estate Coombsville Cabernet Sauvignon 2018, Napa Valley, California

It is time for my
#FridayCabernetfix.

Dark purple/ Inky in color with a short purple rim.

Full bodied with medium acidity and long legs.

Dry and very fruity on the palate with nice complexity.

Showing blackberries, plums, cooked cherries, spices, cedar, licorice, chocolates, vanilla, coffee, black pepper, bitter herbs and light tar.

Long finish with fine grained tannins and tangy raspberries.

What a delicious Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa Valley this is.
Nicely balanced with a nice mouthfeel. Soft and elegant.

A little young right now, but already enjoyable, even by itself. Will continue to age nicely in the next 10 to 15 years.

Good right out of the bottle, and better with airtime. A gorgeous wine made by Julien Fayard.

Good by itself or with food, and will pair nicely with a nice piece of steak.

A blend of two Cabernet Sauvignon clones from Coombsville. Aged in new French oak barrels for over 18 months. A small production of less than 4,000 bottles made.

14.9% alcohol by volume.

93 points.

$200.

Nice robust cherry. A bit gritty on the opening, settled into an approachable Cab with some air.

Julien Fayard, winemaker for Covert Estate, Azur, Taplin Cellars, Matthew Wallace and more, stopped by Fort Worth tonight to showcase a few different wines. A pleasure to meet and share wines with!

This was fun to taste alongside the Matthew Wallace. Two very different AVAs (this being Coombsville, MW being Stag’s Leap). Both had similarities in dark fruit being the most dominant, but this had much more “cool” fruit notes as well as stone and graphite. This wine showed an immense amount of freshly squeezed blackberries on the mid-palate with cedar and mint. At 5-years old, it still shows as a baby with the tannic finish. Long decant necessary.

I was able to visit this property back in ‘16 and the caves and tasting room and drop dead gorgeous...some of the most beautiful I’ve come across. Entire line-up is very solid.

Was able to visit the up and coming, and stunning estate, of Covert Estate in Coombsville. The tasting room in the caves of the estate is the most impressive I've seen.

Though we got to sample their Sauvignon blanc as well as a clone cab and my favorite which was the Sage (Pritchard Hill fruit), I felt like their estate Coombsville cab represented them best. Could smell it a mile away in the glass. Tortoise like speed for the legs. Great medley of red and black fruits as well as tannins proving this can be socked away for a good while and be just fine.

This is the Clone 341 Cabernet Sauvignon.

Deep and dark ruby red. Tons of layers on the nose; burnt rubber, leather, tobacco, dark cocoa, dark and black fruits and even a bit floral. Heavy tannins (8.5/10) and full bodied. Thick and definitely needs some time. Black raspberries on the attack, a little anise, cinnamon, dark cocoa and a little savory undertone. Long and lingering finish with tons of structure. Drink till 2036. (95+)

Aged for 22 months in 100% new French oak.

Dark ruby with violet hues. A touch smokey on the nose with sweet tobacco, herbs, spices, dust and a touch of plum. Moderate plus tannins (7.5/10) and full bodied. Solid acidity and backbone, built for the long haul. Dark and deep fruits, dried ones too, a bit of herbs and perfumey as well. Long and slightly dry lingering finish. Drink till 2030. (93+)
