The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli is quite mineral in the glass. Ashen stones, savory grilled herbs and smoked meats give way to woodland berries. This is dark and radiant, showing the classic racy fruit of the year, yet unbelievably soft and plaint, taking on a saline edginess toward the close. It finishes youthfully coy with dusty tannins, leaving just a touch of lingering licorice. The Montosoli is understated today, yet with a feminine beauty and inner sweetness that I find attractive. Beautiful fruit and tannin. Ready now but years to go on

At full maturity, it unloads a full bouquet of tertiary aromas. Roasted herbs, forest floor, sun dried tomato. Tannins still hold a nice amount of grip on the finish.

Good full pale ruby-red. Knockout aromas and flavors of red cherry, raspberry, licorice and minerals, complicated by hints of iris and violet. Extremely suave and polished on the extremely long, pure, mineral finish. Deeper, richer, more tannic and longer than the lovely 2013 Brunello Classico from Altesino, this is an absolutely beautiful Brunello. I especially like that the pristine, refined aromas and flavors of the famed Montosoli site are showcased to maximum effect here. One of the best Brunellos of the vintage. (Ian D'Agata, Vinous, April 2018)

Great structure here. Severe tannins encapsulate bright but ripe cherries and minerality. Youthful finish. Will age well. Best from 2020.

Altesino became the first Montalcino estate to introduce the concept of "cru" wines, made with a special selection of grapes from a single vineyard. Enticing Ruby with ripe fruit aromas and earthy tones. On the palate cherry, blackberry and plum flavors with cacao, licorice and leather notes. Lingering finish, refined tannins ending with chewy earthy notes. Great now but will get better. Wow!

My last bottle from a case I’ve been treasuring from a visit to the winery in 2007. Was a great visit and tasting experience. This was ready to drink, perfect window.

Notes of Black cherry, horse saddle and herbs. I'm really enjoying my virtual trip to Italy's most iconic wine region.
