A monumental vintage in the Napa Valley that forever changed the interest and image of California wine. Burgess Cellars was producing some very compelling wines and this Vintage Selection is in its decline but still very good. Deep aromas of coffee, tobacco and aromatic wood along with floral and retained cherry/raspberry fruit notes. Drink now if you are lucky enough to have any. With all old wines storage is the key.

Amazing what a couple of years does. Napa Cabs are rising in price, but there’s still nothing in the world that tastes like this. Dried raspberry, dried berry spice, mid palate of dark chocolate, burnt leaves and earth, finishes dry, musty with a touch of wood. Robust but calm tannin. Magnificent.

The mid-1970’s had Burgess putting out very special wines. This 1973 was vibrating with life and unfurled a beautiful array of cassis and spice box aromas. Very refined. It’s all about the storage now.

Given the age, I had to be generous on the rating. Definitely the oldest Napa Cab I've tried! Albeit end of life, notes of ripe fruit, tobacco and wet sawdust. I feel fortunate to have shared this wine with some great friends (old and new).
