It is time for some Merlot on this #MerlotThursday.

Dark ruby in color with a wide cloudy reddish/ brick rim.

Medium plus in body with medium plus acidity.

Very dry on the palate with raspberries, cherries, spices, light oak, licorice, dark chocolates, tobacco leaf, earth, herbs, wet leaves and peppercorn.

Short finish with fine grained tannins and tangy cranberries.

This is a very interesting Merlot from Pomerol. Probably not at its peak any longer, but still drinking nicely. A little unbalanced, though.

Feels younger than it is, and the cork looks suspiciously too fresh.

Good right out of the bottle, and better after 30 minutes of airtime.

This 27-year-old is tangy and spicy. Always nice to drink these kind of old wines.

Paired nicely with the Brie cheese.

A blend of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Aged in new French oak barrels for over a year.

13% alcohol by volume.

88 points.

$95 (current vintage).

The 2019 Bon Pasteur has more fruit concentration than either the Gravette de Certan and La Fleur de Gay tasted alongside - blackberry and wild strawberry, truffle and a touch of smoke. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, fine acidity, firm backbone yet with plenty of freshness on its sappy finish. A fine Pomerol. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting. (Neal Martin, Vinous, February 2023)

This is 2011 Vintage -Deep Brooding dark fruit , dried tobacco leaf , coca powder , vanilla , oak background - probably hit this a little early even after 10 -11 years

What a treat - Sunday night with the WNH gang on zoom - this 09 reminds me of the classic style of the 1982 vintages - super vibrant ripe dark fruit - merlot dominated with the cab franc woven in for length and full body - all the hallmarks of Pomerol with this chateau bordering St Emilion which means a blend of softness of the merlot from one region integrated with structure and power from the other - balance was immediate on the the palette and nose - the complexities were evident with mocha toasty wood and some dried fruit but this remarkable wine was more new world than old - @Antonio Galloni mentioned Messato as Michel consults for Messato and I see this but the ripeness was amazing and the cab franc for me separates itself distinctively for the Le Bon Pesteur - bet this wine has 20 plus years left but definitely in the drinking window right now so no need to wait - great call to try the 2009 vintages of Bordeaux @Shay A and @Bill Bender - I think you are going to like hearing what others had from the 09 as we all agreed that this vintage delivers and at the price point it gives really good challenge to the red blends of Napa

The family Estate of Michel Rolland, aka The Good Shepherd. This wine was in an amazing place with dried black plum, black berry, raspberry with secondary notes of bakers chocolate, fine herbs and toast. $85 at Auction was a steal.

Sipping Fine Wine

Located in Maillet, on good terroirs of Pomerol appellation, purchased around 1920 by Hermine and Joseph Dupuy. Since 1978 the two grandsons of the estate's founders, Jean-Daniel and Michel Rolland, run the estate. Ruby with garnet edges. A blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Dark berry aromas and spice. On the palate blackberry and cherry flavors with toasty herb spice, fine tannins, full body on long finish ending with developing fruit, oak and spice. Great now.

The “profile” of this one is big, bold and delicious. The wine follows suit. Gorgeous bouquet of tar, gravel and sweet red sticky fruit. Very expressive on entry with full rich and powerful lines. My fist ‘09 Bordeaux and this was singing. Gorgeous merlot dominated wine.

This is near or at peak and drinking like a rock star. Beautiful finesse, elegance and subtlety French. No obvious wood just fine class French blend. Love it
