A tasting of nine 2012 Sonoma Coast Pinots. My and the group’s #1, a delicious, meaty, yet elegant Pinot.

Holiday fruit cake, lavender, aromatic, Carmel, bourbon, blueberries. With air the holiday spice was intoxicating, cranberry, ‘blue-raspberry’, mint, well-oiled barn. Orange flambé. Dark, sweet-fruit-Californian. Must love.

Solid like all their Pinots. Constrained and balanced. At Family Winemakers of California Tasting in Del Mar.

Based in Sonoma, fruit is sourced from both Sonoma and Napa, showcasing the character of the individual vineyards. This wine opens with distinctive earthy aromas with herb and berry fruit scents. On the palate the fruit leans toward tart cranberry and strawberry flavor with bitter herbs, mushrooms and black tea. Smooth tannins well balanced on lingering finish ending with oak tones and earthiness that creeps in to the end.

Cherry color. Cherry nose. Cherry cola on the tongue. Lots of acidity and lots of cold fruit. Subtly gingerbread on finish.

Sojourn is on a roll. The '14 Rodgers Creek is probably their 2nd best recent offering (2nd only to the WS Top 100 Gap's Crown vineyard). We recently sold out of the more expensive Gap's Crown (thanks Wine Spectator!), but the Rodger's Creek at $48 is not to be missed. Beautiful black and red cherries, and a ridiculously long finish. Oh that finish!

Super easy drinking. Great balance and surprisingly good acidity. I was very impressed.
