Luli’s 2021 Syrah (Santa Lucia Highlands) is a potent, brooding wine. Super-ripe dark cherry, blackberry, spice, leather, tobacco and incense race out of the glass. This boisterous Syrah shows quite a bit of intensity but is not exactly finessed, especially in its rather burly contours. $25.00 (Antonio Galloni, Vinous, December 2023)

Gotta give this wine a solid A. It drinks like it's twice the price. While it is an undeniably "Californian" expression of Syrah, it's still got some heft to go with all that fruit. I'll take a case at this price. It's a find. Drink now.

I've admittedly been on a big Syrah kick lately. This is pretty standard juicy dark Napa Syrah. This isn't a Rhone style at all. What it lacks in elegance and subtlety it totally makes up for in dense fruit, slightly savory elements, and hints of pepperiness. I could drink this almost every night.

Medium to full and on the fruity side - ripe black fruit, slightly floral with some olive brine in the background. Tastes like the salty, sandy SLH. Bright acidity, lower tannins (for Syrah), enjoy now. Very nice w/ pancetta pizza 🍕

Hipster label. Elegant I guess. Very dark. Obsucro. Smells like mochas (coffee meets chocolate) sweet sweat, red berries and anise. Flavors of meats, soil, mountain huckleberries, and elderberry syrup. This is lovely, complex, dense stuff. Affordable too. Maybe Santa Lucia Highlands should focus on Syrah over Pinot Noir.

The nose is full of apricots and figs. This Syrah is dry, and sticks to the tongue with great depth. I like a more peppery Syrah, but the acidity of this balances out its lack of pepper. It’s fruity and bold, and I’ll revisit.
