The ‘16 version of this is easy-going. It’s nothing like prior iterations I’ve had. Nose shows intense green bell pepper and lots of sweet clove. There’s some grapey fruit underneath. Lots of American oak in the mouth. Texturally it’s pleasant, with little tannin and a flowing nature. Pretty good acids. Overall disappointing though.

This wine has got the volume turned up to 11 on the Spinal Tap scale. It’s almost frightening. Nose blasts out ink, graphite, iodine, barnyard, cassis extract, eucalyptus, sweat. The palate is aggressive with intense limestoney minerality, screaming acids, scratchy tannins, and iodine-tinged, berry-adjacent (but not fruity) flavors. Some volatility too, but it’s pretty much steamrolled by everything else. On the one hand, I want to see where this goes over the next 10 years. On the other hand, I’m afraid to see where this goes over the next 10 years. I guess this is on-brand for this eccentric producer.

Not sure how this is only an 8.5. Huge nose and flavors to match.

Good balance of fruit and acid without too much oak. Spicy. Good with steak.

It was a bit smokey, not very tannic but had a jammy flavor.
