Reiver Barossa Valley Shiraz

At 12yrs of age, this is drinking quite smooth while still retaining a bit of Aussie power. I imagine this one was quite a flavor bomb near release, but it’s balanced today. Aromatically it has cocoa powder, juicy cherries and jammy blackberries, currant, mulberries and cinnamon. Lighter bodied than expected on the palate with a clean and pure profile. Cherry smoked wood, graham cracker, ripe black cherries and just a hint of menthol and Andes mint (which I commonly get with Aussie Shiraz). Not getting any better, but will probably hold in this window for a few more years.

16 years young. This is aging beautifully with flavors of dark black and blue fruits mixed with a touch of black pepper. Resolved tannins, and a great smooth texture. Lovely, balanced and not showing signs of fading yet.

This was a fun outlier on the night from @Carl Fischer and although I think it’s 100% Shiraz it plays like a petite Syrah/Zin blend. As purple as wine gets. Ripe plum and full grainy mouthfeel.

Picked this up on a whim. Deep garnet colored, this was silky smooth, a bit smokey, but even after 15 years had an abundance of fruit. Plum, chocolate, leather. Delicious. First time having an aged Australian Shiraz and this certainly held up and didn't disappoint. I'm going back tomorrow to buy whatever the store has left.

Powerful but nicely tempered by the twelve years. Quite good, a crowd pleaser, and drinking well right now.

Still a bit tannic, and much better 2 hours after decanting. Mature, but there is still plenty of life ahead of it. Fresh but fruity and enjoyable.

Last time it scored higher but it was up against some serious Bordeaux competition tonight which made this seem a bit one dimensional.

Perfect in balance between sweet and power. Good freshness and perfect pairing with ribs with a cherry based dry rub.

Dark, inky, fruit forward like berries moving through leather and cigar smoke into a finish.
