Vintage 2020 | I smelled olive, melkchocolade, cherry. Still a purple rim. Frivolous and vibrant, gains interest with aeration.

I love a good Pinotage and this is delicious! Very smooth, slightly oaky with red fruit.

One of the oldest properties in Stellenbosch. Pinotage can be a difficult variety but this is really delightful. Ripe blackberries, touch of smoke. Full bodied and well integrated oak.

Delicious delicious estate wine! Heady heady estate wine. With lively enough acid to dance off the richness. Purpley things, flowers, black cherries, and potpourri all do their darnedest to take you down but it has a lift that keeps you up. And drinking more of it.

Denser color than Pinot Noir. Nose is more muted. Flavor is also more bold and intense than your standard Strawberry profile. More plum, gritty tannins, blackfruit jam. A fun experience.

Colour is a very dark crimson with a tawny rim developing. Savoury southern Rhone type aromas of Loam and Tobacco showing more Cinsault than Pinot Noir. Pinotage is regarded as South Africa’s signature variety and is a hybrid of Pinot Noir and Cinsault. Little oak influence on the palate with such savoury dirty flavours it’s almost Bretty but will give the benefit of the doubt. I had a 2013 of this wine a few years ago which showed more black berry fruits than this 2010 now. Kanonkop (note the embossed cannon on the glass bottle ) was one of the first properties to plant Pinotage. I bought this bottle in Stellenbosch in 2013. @David T Iknow David Trumper is over there at the moment and would recommend this wine.

Such a well made Pinotage. Would have guessed high quality left-bank Bordeaux.

This was excellent. Most acidity has disappeared but enough fruit to carry the day. An incredible blackberry jam and banana purée combo. I know, sounds weird but it’s really nice.

Third wine and second red wine at our annual DMV South Africa Tasting. Deep ruby core with lighter edges. A little mute to start on the nose with some smokiness, dark blackberries, spices and cedar. Medium tannins (6.5/10), solid acidity and medium plus to full bodied. A bit reserved on the palate to start. Darker in the palate than the nose with dark blue and black berries, and spices. Fruitier on day two. Long and lingering finish. Still seems to have quite a bit of life left in it. Drink till 2026.

Pinotage xmas day-a soft pillow, all rounded edges, black currants, & lovely-if not particularly challenging
