8.8

For the birthday girls dessert, we had dense fudge frosted chocolate cake and cherry pie.

So, how do you pair both with one wine? Port is too heavy for cherry pie, yet perfect for dense chocolate frosted cake. So, Ruby Port to the rescue.

It starts with nice ripe bright light red and medium dark red fruits to support the cherry pie and just enough chocolate darkness and tannin structure to fit densely frost fudge cake.

While this gets an 8.8, everyone enjoyed it with the desserts but, came back for seconds (including me) and a couple had thirds. Easy drinker & crowd pleaser. Technically an 8.8 on the all around scale but, higher on the enjoyment scale.

Happy Birthday Christina & Hedy!

Photos of; the river that divides the Port Houses and city center in Oporto. Port house of Offley and the old river boats that carried the port barrels from the Douro Valley into Oporto for aging.

Nice strawberry fruit port. Kick of heat with alcohol but finish is lovely and mellow.
