2018 was a stellar vintage for Margaret River in amongst always good years. Life is short, open a darling on a Monday night. Birthday week.

Blackberry to begin with. More SA than WA in style. After a while bay leaf and typical Margaret River herbaceousness. Great balance, perfect tannins moderate acid. A solid future to end of this decade. A terrific 2nd wine from Woodlands. 70% Cabernet, 16% Merlot, 14% Malbec.

Enticing mature Cabernet smell of Plum Mocha and black currant - Barb said dusty chest of drawers. and a delicious palate. Excellent Margaret River Cabernet particularly for Woodlands’ 2nd string Cuvée. From a good vintage in 2010 with many years to go. Only 2 bottles left from an original dozen. Had another bottle 60 weeks later on 16th June 2023. Previous notes apply. This a proper Cabernet! I don’t often detect black olive as a Cabernet descriptor but I see it in this tasting. One left - I will have in 2 plus years time.

The “Margaret” blend from Woodlands is their 2nd Cabernet blend with the “Family Member” Series being their premium Cuvée. A Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec blend. Herbal notes with black currant and cedar. Great structure particularly for a 2nd wine. Good balance with some sweetness and persistence. Probably another 6 to 8 years in this.

Happy that I've cellared this well: deep, Rich and elegant. Oak framing this well, fruit present - fading - cedar. Superb.

Margaret is the 2nd wine of the highly rated Woodlands in the Wilyabrup sub district. Opened with a classical Cabernet nose. Medium weight - some astringency at finish. The 2009 had recently was stunning. 17.

You know you’ve got great neighbours when they give you a bottle of Woodlands 2012 ‘Margaret’ to drink. We popped it in the wine fridge (hence the snapshot from my OENO by Vintec cellar app) however it lasted all of 2 days on there before I had to hit that ‘consume’ button in the app.

Woodlands specialise in Bordeaux blends - plus they make some delicious Chardonnays as we found out when we visited the cellar door in Margaret River in 2014 on a Top Drop Tour.

‘Margaret’ is a blend of Cab Sauv (74%), Merlot (14%) and Malbec (12%). Prior to release the wine spent 18 months in French 🇫🇷 oak.

In the glass it’s a rich plum colour. On the nose I found it rather savoury with whiffs of cigar box, earth and spice. There’s also some cassis coming through. In the mouth it’s smooth and rounded with a lovely length finish. Mr Spittoon made his spaghetti 🍝 bolognese to go with it 👌

All opinions are based on my own taste buds. Wine is subjective & always evolving, so make sure you drink what you enjoy!

Super dense rich cabernet nose with the classic MR vegetal twist. Dark plum, iron, chocolate, and raisins. The palate is med-full but still packs a big punch. Lavender, leather, deep black fruit, and sandalwood. Tannins are fully integrated. Just hanging in there.

Amazing old world acidity. Very long finish for an Aussie Cab. If you can get a bottle, good luck!
