This week our group tasted nine Cabs from arround the world, all from the 2001. Really interesting what 20 years of aging can do depending on the terroir. This split the group. I thought the oxidation dominated the profile, but others sensed Indian spices, and other delightful tones that eventually emerged.

This is a very enjoyable Cabernet from Napa with the perfect amount of age on it. I am surprised at the ratings on delectable. Beautiful bramble fruit on the nose with a slight touch of oak. On the palette there is an enjoyable minerality that blends beautifully with the black fruit and an appropriate amount of acidity to give the oak a nice subtle backbone. Very enjoyable for the price point, I could see this doing well for a few more years in the bottle.

Third red wine in our annual DMV South Africa wine tasting. This one was the ringer. Mix of brick and garnet red. A touch of prunes on the nose with tomatoes, cherry liqueur and dates. Medium tannins (6/10) and medium plus body. A bit sweet on the palate with stewed berries, dark spices, raisins and touch of dark gravel. Medium to medium plus finish. Drink now.

Deep ruby color, medium + aromas of rosé petals, violets, vanilla, dark cherries, currants, and toast. Medium + tannins and body with developing flavors of cherry, chocolate, leather, rose petals, and vanilla. A medium + finish.

This lovely 32 year old had a green herb and black olive nose that would be easy to mistake for Chinon! Great with lamb blocks and quite fresh on the finish!

Firm tannins still in place, but too much mucking a stable floor flavor going on.

Hello Friday! Here's my Cabernet fix...

Dark ruby in color with a purplish rim.

Light nose, and still tight, with blueberries, cherries, licorice, oak, light vegetables, coffee, chocolates and peppercorn.

Full bodied with medium acidity and long legs.

Extra dry on the palate with blackberries, black currants, plums, vanilla, licorice, light oak, peppercorn, spices and beef jerky.
Nice finish with firm tannins and black pepper.

This is a very nice Napa Cabernet. Still young, but already enjoyable, even by itself. Balanced, complex and interesting. Very dry with big tannins and a nice mouthfeel.

Needs an hour to open up. This should be much better in a couple of years.

14.1% alcohol by volume.

Velvet tannins. Fruit forward. Approachable and easy to down. But with enough complexity to make me take it seriously. Emma Stone of cabs.
