So many #southafrican #southafricanwine even if they say they are a different varietal, seem like they have pinotage.

We had this with Oxtail dinner at Rattray’s in Mala Mala last night.

Not my usual detailed notes. This is ripe & lush like the Nederburg but with more complexity.

The palate showed ripe and slightly candied fruits of; dark currants, blackberries, black raspberries, dark cherries and a hint of blue fruits. Nice softly layered baking spices, dark chocolate, mocha, rich, dark soils, some dry top, well done granitic minerals and fresh red and dark florals. The acidity round & beautiful. The finish, ripe, lush, well balanced & polished. Good QPR here.

Photos of, today’s Mala Mala sunrise, baby calf elephant along with the nearly 40 in the herd and a total of over 100 Elephants seen today, playful male dominance of the Giraffe’s intertwining and smacking necks/mid section and the grand prize, male spotted Leopard. An amazing finish to our last day.

Last of the four reds for the blind tasting of Non-American Shiraz/Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon Tasting.

Deep ruby core with a mix of garnet and brick edges. Layered nose with green peppers, spices, forest floor, dark berries and a touch of mushrooms. Medium tannins (5.5/10) with solid acidity. Thick black fruits on the palate with dark cocoa, sweet spices, with some redder berries as it opens with some earthy notes. Medium plus body with a long finish. Drink till 2019.

In my opinion, the best high end Cab from South Africa. It has that touch of vegetal notes that shows it's sense of place. The tannins are silky and refined.

Medium garnet red. Solid bell peppers on the nose, might be a little charred or even jalapeño with chalk. A little dirty too. Surprised with the power of this wine. Moderate tannins (6/10) and medium bodied. Solid minerality with a bit of forest floor. Truffles and iron too with balanced acidity. Medium plus finish and very well rounded. No reason to wait much longer on this. Drink now.

the nose is different to what you expect... the taste is superb! it is velvety smooth... probably not the best with pork (I recommend beef!) but a superb wine none the less...
