So this was one of those moments, where I have an opportunity to taste a wine that affects my perspective as a winemaker. It was such an honor to savor a 22 year old Rioja Tempranillo. My first thoughts were "Breathe it in. I'm in love..." 100% Tempranillo, aged for 4.5 yrs in all French Oak, bottled in May of 1999. Subtle oak, tea. Menthol on the finish. Smooth with such finesse. A little soy sauce. When those in Rioja say that they make Tempranillo that will live long, they aren't kidding! Special thanks to Rocio Osborne, 6th generation at #bodegasmontecillo for sharing this beautiful wine with Deb and I today.

Apr 12th, 2016At its apex. Can't image it being better. Very evident fruit, fairly bright color, fully integrated tannins. A pleasure.

Unfortunately didnt show so well, off bottle i guess. Muted nose with some spicy fruit and cheese rind and leather, palate was quite dried out but still had a decent finish...better luck next time. 1981 vintage.

Sep 12th, 2013Propobly a bad bottle or stored badly. After 40 years this wine had very little taste or smell left. It was ok, not very fruit nor any share tanniner. Not bad just a bit fainted

Mogen Rioja som fått ligga till sig på flaska i decennium. Doften är mäktig. Plommon, mörka bär, oliver och vanilj. Smaken har tydlig ålder och den initiala fatlagringen känns. Mogna plommon, svart te, dill, grön paprika, kakao, örter, anis. En fint avslut med antydan av tanin.

A well-made rioja with maturity a bit over it’s peak for me. Terrific for those wishing the full-on rioja experience with lots of typicity.

Jul 1st, 2018Var och snurrade i piemonte, barbera närmare bestämt. Mycket mörka bär, lite körsbär, djupt skogsaktig doft av fuktig grön mossa. Inga tanniner, en del fat.
