Dark Ruby with dark berry fruit aromas and smoky notes, from old vines up to 70 years, aged for 20 months in oak. On the palate flavors of ripe plum and black fruits with cacao, spice, oak and mineral notes. Soft fine tannins, vivid acidity ending with oak, smoke and mineral spice on the long finish. A superb wine.

Opaque ruby. Powerful aromas of black and blue fruit preserves, vanilla, licorice and violet, along with a smoky mineral quality. Fleshy and broad on the palate, offering pliant blueberry, cherry liqueur and mocha flavors and building hints of oak spices and candied flowers. The vanilla and blue fruit notes reverberate on a smoky long finish framed by slowly building tannins. (Josh Raynolds, Vinous, February 2021)

Moncayo is Alto Moncayo's pride and joy; both dark and bold, pronounced and lasting, this is 100% old vine Garnacha planted to the southwesterly slopes of Moncayo mountain in the Campo de Borja (KAHM-po day BOAR-ha) appellation of Aragon in north central Spain. Here the iron rich red clay is poor in organic matter but mixes with some calcareous limestone which when coupled with low rainfall yields few clusters of extremely concentrated Garnacha (the native Spanish variety known in France and the Rhone in particular as Grenache). Deep, rich cherries and grilled plums meld with cola and root spices, floral high notes and warm toasty notes akin to dark cocoa and dark roasted coffee. Few wines bear this much concentration nor warrant aging in both French and American oak but 30 to 90 year old Garnacha has guts and plenty of stuffing to manage and so all these scents and flavors combine to great effect all throughout and long onto the finish. Another total knockout from Alto Moncayo. This could very well become my go to red for big juicy steaks off the grill.

Monthly WTF wine group meet up. Theme was “bring something good”. All wines (minus the bubbles and SB) were tasted blind.

Young, but really delicious right now. Flaunting rich oak tones up front (I guessed American Oak), dark baked berry pie, oozing blackberries and blueberries over fig and coca dusted dates. Hardly any black pepper. Kiss of spice toward the finish. I called this Ridge zin. Thanks,
@Jack Thompson .

I can almost chew this wine its so big and bold! This is Campo de Borja 2016 Alto Moncayo. The color is deep Burgundy. The legs are slow and thick. The bouquet, fields of lavendar and lilac. The initial palate is amazing!!!!! Huge blackberry, boysenberry and raspberry. Then there is a small hint of cherry in the background somewhere. You can tell these vines are really old. The mid palate is phenomenal. Spice and vanilla- yum! Lots of oak and earth. The thickness reminds me of a juicy filet mignon. The finish is dry and lingering with the feel of butter left behind. Time to serve with dinner:
Filet mignon, baked potato, mustard greens, and a french baguette. Happy St. Valentine’s day to me!!!!!!!

A joint venture of Jorge Ordonez, Bodegas Borsao and Chris Ringland, located in the town of Bulbuente (Zaragoza) Spain. Alto Moncayo is the flagship of the winery. A single-grape variety of Garnacha, from vines between 40 and 70 years old, aged in new barrels for 20 months. Bold aromas of fruit and spice. On the palate black fruit flavors, rich and full-bodied, with complex spice. Fine tannins, savory, good structure ending with a smoky character. Very nice!

What a difference a year makes. I last tasted this at the end of 2016 and thought it would benefit from some time. It’s firing on all cylinders now, and reminiscent of the spectacular 2009s and 2011s. Extracted raspberry, smoked mesquite and hickory, balsamic, and vanilla wafer, with a dry earth and pure mineral streak that runs through it. Extraordinary savoriness.

Let's put it this way: a FULL glass of this dark, extracted deliciousness spilled on the carpet in the middle of our family room, and the only thing we were upset about was losing that glass of wine.

Wow. What great wine. Beautiful big nose of plums and pears and dark berries. Deep purple and dark red color. Semi-sweet cherries are the immediate tongue burst, and it slides into a full fruit berries, plums and a earthy tone in the back. After 30 minutes or so, the tang of cherries calms to more fruit and a softer, rounder flavor with soft spicy feel on the end. Very nice. Will definitely get again.
