Beast. Inky. Tar. Blood. With 12 years under its belt it decided to be an old school Rhône when it grew up!

This bottle rode out to California with me a few years back and then flew back with me on Friday. The 2006 Todos from Jonata is a blend of 39% Syrah, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Sangiovese, and the rest Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, and Viognier. It’s an ideal match for Texas BBQ with its rich fruit, but bone dry finish, and a mix of herbs and spices in between.

2010 vintage. Santa Ynez Valley AVA in Santa Barbara County. Blend of 10 different grape varieties. 78 % Syrah, 8% Sangiovese, 5% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Sauvignon, 1% Viognier, 1% Grenache, 1% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot, 1% Sauvignon Blanc and 1% Sémillon. Aged in 50% new French oak and 50% neutral French oak. Smells animal-like at first, but opens up spectacularly immediately after decanting. Intense nose of cassis, Provencal herbs and a touch of blackberry jam. Layers of dark fruit, excellent balancing acidity and a long spicy finish.

The 2011 Todos is entering an nice drinking window. Nose of violets, dark fruit and meat. Still big and ripe despite the cooler vintage. Still has grippy tannins on the finish. It was great with smoked pork chops.

More like Jolata. Explosively rich, but with a bitter edge that keeps it contained. Lots of reverb. Dark, black fruit, incense, cacao nibs, crushed rock, and laced with Herbes de Provence.

Meaty, bloody, spicy and bold. This winery is doing great things in Santa Barbara County.

Another example of Matt Dees excellent abilities as a winemaker. Deftly straddles hedonism with balance. Like a heavily whipped black raspberry and mocha milkshake that's both rich and ethereal. The secondary notes, including herbs and spices are quite distinctive and mostly Provençal in origin, but there's some other interesting savories the make this special. This has small amounts of Viognier, Sangiovese, Grenache, Merlot, and Petit Verdot (The balance being 75% Syrah, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon).
