Another Total Wine pick up, as I try to expand my horizons. This is a Cotês du Rhône Villages AOC which is a separate AOC from the more well known Côtes du Rhône wines. Villages was established as an AOC back in 1966-1967 with Cairanne being 1 of the 5 recognized villages in this AOC. This blend is a GSM at 80% Grenache, 15% Syrah, and 5% Mouvèdre. It's also a tale of two cities - drink it while funky or let it mellow out for a few hours, your choice. ~$18 | #côtesdurhônevillages #gsm #totalwine

On the eyes: Sunset red with orange rim. Light stain, med+ tears, no gas. Floc present.

On the nose: (Undecanted) Earthy, musty, mushroom filled forest floor. There is also sour cherry and olive. Med alcohol. (Next day) Still sour cherry and vinous, with only hints of earthiness.

On the tongue: (Undecanted) Med alcohol, med tannin, med+ acid. Mushroom, fennel, and petrol rounded by sour cherry and oak. Med finish, med complexity. (Next day) loss of sulfurous notes with a smoother finish.

A nice cores du Rhone. It needs to stand a bit to develop

2011. Good basic southern rhone wine. Bulky nose with black plum and a touch of earth. Pretty straightforward for anytime drinking with some sweet black fruit and cinnamon-infused milk chocolate on the palate, if not a bit flabby.

Drank this after it has been in a bottle for 8 years - after giving it time to open up, it was rather acidic on the front and unpleasantly oakey on the back

Really dark fruit flavors with provencal herbs joining the party. I always love these wines for their old world funk and roasted fruit characteristics.
