Glorius wine in a very good year. Very accessible, very fine tannins, extraverted.

This is not my style but quite the blockbuster wine. Chewy, dense, still tight & lord knows we could have waited...red fruited, what gorgeous fruit & integrated tannins, surprisingly. Drank at sunset, outside, on a gorgeous Sunday evening.

The 2000 Valbuena 5° is a simply magical Ribera del Duero bottling which is harmonious and highly Bordelaise at this exciting stage in its development. Taken from a good, albeit challenging vintage in Ribera, the wine is is evolving beautifully. The wine opens with a beautiful bouquet of peat moss, forest floor, wild mushrooms, and suggestions of wild blackberry compote which all mingle together marvelously in the glass.. The palate is plush showing off a silky texture and delightful mouthfeel. Bright acidity remains, as a light dusting of salinity runs through a core of black fruits with suggestions of black truffle shavings, cigar box, and leather tones. The exceedingly gratifying finish lingers long. While this wine is showing magically at this stage, it still has at least another decade of life left- Drink 2019-2033- 94

A stunning wine, the 1997 Valbuena 5° is a simply outstanding Ribera del Duero which is incredible at more than twenty years of age. This has turned out to be a complete success from a challenging vintage in Ribera and is evolving beautifully. This has great earthy character with wild mushroom, peat moss, black cherry compote and coffee grounds and cassis which all come to mind as the aromatics are absolutely seductive. The palate is plush and gorgeously textured, showing polished black tea, leather, black fruits and truffles which all marvelously combine with a bright minerality . This is a stunning wine which is showing remarkably well and will continue to evolve into the next decade. Drink 2019-2033- 96
