The Sangiovese grapes are the workhorse of Tuscany, but thanks to those Warring City-States, we get to enjoy this Montelpuciano. It’s not aromatic, like the Burgundy reds you almost want to splash behind your ears; this is more muted—to be eaten with a good stew or shoulder or pork. It has a backbone of acidity, if we were in California we’d expect this to slip into sweetness... but we’re not and it doesn’t, phew.

Thick textured and sour, without well defined fruit. Loads of Brett. A different wine than we tasted in the tasting room? Or is it just that we're no longer in Italy?
