Monthly WTF wine group night. Our theme was American oak vs French oak. All wines tasted blind. We started off with two bottles of bubbly and finished with two non-themed reds.

Fun to contrast alongside the ‘12 Ridge Cab. A lot more rich fruit here, but also channeling more tannin. Rich blue and black fruits with currant, baking spices at first, but there is a very nice balance of herbal notes, bayleaf and dusty tannin. Very enjoyable and still getting better. This place has one of the most gorgeous tasting rooms I’ve ever seen, so visiting is a must! Thanks

Just a beautifully made wine all around that benefits from age. Opulent and smooth, the Merlot from this property always stands out for me over the Cab. Excellent effort from the 09 vintage!

Finally getting around to posting wines from my annual Napa trip from two weeks ago. Always goes by quick! Lots of fun new stops this year.

We returned to Hourglass after our visit in 2018 as the wines are just so enjoyable, but the tasting cave may be one of the coolest spots to enjoy a glass of wine.

Compared to the Estate cab, the Blueline seems more dusty and tannic. Tart currant, baking spices, baked mixed berry pie, herbal spice and graphite. Very compact and dense. Coats the entire palate with fruit, smoked meat, vanilla pipe tobacco and cedar. Hold.

This is not the style I'm looking for. Too ripe but I have to admit that it is a well made wine for its style.

Big dark fruit (blackberry, blueberry) with leather, spice, tobacco and minerality nuances.

This wine is a monster right now and it was opened yesterday. Inky dark cassis; blackberries, black plum, plum, black raspberries, blue fruits, hugely pronounced tannins, anise, strong leather, tobacco with ash, soft spice, vanilla, caramel, dark & milk chocolate, anise, cedar, black olive, black tea, dry crushed rocks, rich loamy dark soil, great; structure, length, balance, tension, acidity and long rich, elegant, full finish that doesn't end. Pictured...the tasting cave at Hourglass. Or, maybe it's a lounge?
