Curmudgeon Red Bordeaux Blend 2014

Had to go with a sure thing after a disappointing pull last night. Fu@k me what a wine! Massive and complex with ripe black fruit, tar, tobacco, herbs, spice, and menthol. The finish hangs out in your nostrils for 45 seconds. Kicking myself for only buying one. — 7 years ago

Cool,
I didn't get any 15, figured it couldn't get any better than the 14. I went with Sugar loaf, Calextro, Saunders & EE.

Sweet. Got those minus the Saunders. Got a Tench and a Tin Box for the first time too.

Goodness. I guess based on enjoying even just the pinots I probably should get myself on the Bevan list.

Cakebread Cellars

Benchland Select Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2001

Nose has wet cedar, dried black cherry, blackberry compote, black currant must, dry earth and (light) cigar box.

Palate has spiced cherry, spicy oak/cedar, blackberry jam, chocolate powder and notable but fine tannins.

My prior notes stated a wait until 2021+ before our next bottle...TBH I never looked at my notes before selecting this bottle tonight, so 🤷🏻‍♂️. Now that we're at 2021, there's noted improvement and I calmly suggest future bottle (there's only one left) should be between 2026-2031, as this is holding just fine.

In following to my prior comment on this bottle; We have a love/hate relationship with Wine Spectator whom tasted this at 80 pts in 2005. I fully disagree (FU), but do agree there have been 'better' vintages on this vineyard site. (We also have the better vintages 😁 in waiting.)

Decanted 4H, notes at ~5H.

Paired to 'vintage' ribeye's and local grilled corn. Our favorite beef 'dealer' aka farmer, Kinderhook Farm (Valatie, NY) has an interesting program of holding some of their cattle for more than a year, our cuts tonight are from a 5 YO steer. A brief 6m grill and wonderfully medium-rare cuts at ~135°F after resting. Great depth of flavor, less of the grass fed notes we get with the regular (youthful) cuts, just delicious.

Wasn’t holding out much hope for this for whatever reason. Instead, a surprise. Bright fruit flavors, an elegant nose and an amazing acidity. A fantastic partner with my bolognese as i sit in the other room....while the 7 sorority sisters destroy the bread, pasta and kung fu girl riesling in the dining room. 😂 I’m a good dad. — 6 years ago

I broke my face smiling so hard and could not leave a post last night because

THIS WAS BIG BOLD and BEAUTIFUL and thus was SO DAMN GOOD

Bring with me to FL

I am in love with the name Barrett - color hypnotizes me with dark insane luscious purplish red - the smell jumps at me with ninja like moves that look like artist performing Kung Fu - the taste reminds me Sade singing - just really makes me relax and feel - and the finish is all smiles

Weingut Keller

Bürgel Spätburgunder 2011

KP likes to say that he makes pino for fun. However, if this wine is of any indication, KP's pino's are as serious as any of his rieslings. The 11' Burgel would easily give the Burgundies of the vintage a run for their money. In fact, it's apt to say that the wine was very Burgundian, given how most placed it in the region in our blind.

The wine's in a great spot for drinking at the moment. No greeness or lady bug. Bouquet of red and black cherries, sous bois, floral spice, mushroom, soy. The palate's energetic and tangy, fruit's a little more dried out with a more profound spice element, and a touch of creaminess. Silky texture, with tannins and oak fully resolved. There's a sort of balancing VA, which also brings savouriness - I feel this is what makes it quite Burgundian. Up for discussion of course.

It's good to see a pino from when KP still bottled them in riesling bottles - perhaps from when he still thought of them as "fun". This is the oldest pino that I've drank from Keller (would have been the 07' Burgel Felix last year if it wasn't corked. FU cork!) and I think it's safe to say he never did treat his pino's lightly. I mean, it's arguably even crazier now - we did spend four days just sorting the Morstein pino grapes, berry-by-berry, in 2017.

Unpopular opinion: KP's spatburgunder's are not value buys anymore (heck! The 2015 Morstein had a hammer price of 610€ in last year's VDP auction). For me, there's still better wines to be found in Burgundy at the prices that the Keller pino's go for. That said, with the rising prices of the latter, this opinion may soon be invalid.

Freeman Vineyard & Winery

Ryo-fu Russian River Valley Chardonnay 2015

15 Freeman Ryo- Fu Chardonnay. Combination of Keefer & Heintz Ranch Vineyards.
Golden in color. Lily’s and ginger on the nose. The palate has come together in the last eight months. It’s full of a splash of creamy tiramisu, lemon zest, ginger, slight influence of oak. Mostly mid & back palate. Complexity on the back palate is 👍. Nothing quite like this on the market. Drinking better than it did this past fall. Curious to see if the front palate will come together by years end.

Freeman Vineyard & Winery

Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 2014

Freeman Vineyard & Winery is the fruition of a 20-year dream shared by Ken and Akiko Freeman to craft cool climate CA Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Aged for 11 months in French oak (22% new), with grapes from vineyards Rayhill (46%), Campbell (29%) & Yu-Ki Estate (25%). Aromas of berry fruit and exotic spices. On the palate blackberry and cherry with tobacco and tea spice, smooth tannins, well balanced on lingering finish ending with earthy tones. Will keep in cellar for some time. Small prod. 1000 cases. — 7 years ago
