Friday night and had a taste for a Chilean wine so I picked up a couple Carménère. This first I chose was the 2017 Espino Carménère Reserva Especial by William Fèvre. A blend of 85% Carménère, 13% Malbec and 2% Syrah. You may know the name William Fèvre from Burgundy. William wanted to try and find another area for growing Chardonnay and went to Chile and saw the locals using the benches and he wanted something with more elevation so got land closer to the mountains. Here he is producing wonderful Chardonnay, Carménère and many other wines.
On the nose there is black plum, raspberry, cherry, smoked bell pepper, vanilla, hibiscus and some smokey notes.
On the palate there is green bell pepper, strawberry, raspberry, menthol, green peppercorn, spice and sandlewood.
This wine is medium to full bodied with medium to + acidity and medium + mouthcoating grippy tannins that leads into a pleasing long rich tannin finish. Have a wonderful weekend and please stay safe. Nostrovia! 🍷🍷🍷🍷 — 4 years ago
Well balanced, was good on its own and good with a steak. Read about this winery recently then saw one of their wines at a local restaurant. Had to try am glad I did. Will get again. — 3 months ago
Looking for another Pinot Grigio and saw this with a great rating. Opened 2020 for sipping with friends in Texas and everyone complimented the wine. It is crisp, refreshing and aroma that suggests peach and melon with touch of honeysuckle as noted elsewhere. It will be a part of my collection for daily enjoyment! By the way, went well with grilled portobello and cheese sandwich. — 3 years ago
Saw the term ‘dusty tannins’ and it’s super apropos. Can bright perfumed red berries, plum and rhubarb upfront, a little dried fruit and tobacco in the back with a touch of dry forest floor. Juicy wet stone mouthfeel. Finished super long with some black peppercorns — 4 years ago
The was barely mediocre upon first opening. It really turned around after a longgggg decant. Saw some of the character from the more favorable reviews, especially the complexity and nuance and the alcohol backed off a lot. Needs lots of air time. — 4 years ago
Cakebread wine offerings are among my Favs, Chard is no exception, consistent quality year/year. 95% of grapes sourced from Carneros, ‘18 saw 8 months on 1/3 new oak with about 20% of wine going through malolactic fermentation. Aromas of stone fruits, slight & honey scents. On palate complex flavors of apple, peach & lemon zest, balanced with good acidity & great mouthfeel. Long finish ending with fruit, wet stone and toasty character. Very nice, will benefit from short aging. — 4 years ago

The 2021 Saint-Joseph used roughly 50% whole-clusters during fermentation. In comparison, 2022 saw 85% inclusion, while in 2017, no destemming was applied. Coming in at 12.5% alcohol, the deep purple-hued 2021 unfurls with pretty red fruits paired with leafy undertones and cedar. Orange blossom and rose petal add welcome floral lift. Light to medium in body, this is a delicate Gonon, neatly framed by velvety tannins and bright acidity. It should drink well right out of the gate. Tasted twice with consistent notes.
