Dreadnought Waiheke Island Syrah 2012

Mid to deep crimson in colour. Aromas of red berries, a little oak, a bunchie stalky note, spices including nutmeg and a dash of chocolate. Medium plus bodied quite northern Rhone in style more than SA. Not dissimilar to another excellent North Island Syrah as in Trinity Hill, Hawkes Bay. Very good, very tasty. From the unlikely destination of Waiheke Island which is in the middle of Auckland Harbour, which is massive in area compared to Sydney Harbour. One would think the rainfall might be a little high for quality viticulture but not so. Also when you think that one of the best new world Chardonnays in Kumeu River is made just to the north of Auckland. — 2 days ago

Been to Waiheke Island to visit Kennedy Point where they used to make outstanding Syrah (and other reds)

@ESF Fun fact about Waiheke Island You might recall that Tiger Woods had a New Zealand caddy for many years. When Tiger got married and almost at the height of his popularity he had part of his honeymoon on Waiheke Island so I was told by locals. Great for the privacy - organised by the caddy.

Sur Echalas Vineyard Syrah 2017

A load of barnyard funk here, in typical Christophe Baron fashion. A very young wine so I’m giving this the benefit of the doubt at this stage. Less bell pepper than I’ve experienced with Cayuse, but a similar smoked meat profile. Polarizing as others have stated, but I dig it. Happy New Year! — 20 days ago

Champoux Vineyard Red Bordeaux Blend 2012

Popped and poured, consumed over three days with very little evolution over that period but if I had to make a call, I would say best on Day 3. It presents a turbid, deep ruby in the glass. On the nose, purple flowers, dried leaf tobacco, tomato leaf, and freshly tilled earth. On the palate, currants, tart blackberries, kalamata olive brine, dried blood...it’s saline, sanguine and ferrous in a real way. The 2012 Champoux Vineyard is a structured, high acid/high tannin Bordeaux blend of predominately Cabernet Franc with some Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon for good measure. Long, long finish. A very earthy and mineral driven wine. Blind, there is no way I would call this New World. This bottle is yet another reminder why I truly believe Andrew Will makes some of the very greatest wines in Washington State. This has at least another decade of life left in it. — 10 days ago

Horse Heaven Hills Merlot 2013

We had the 2013 Red Mountain, Klipsun Vineyard Merlot. There were tastes of plum, blackberry, oak and chocolate. This is a smooth, fruit forward, full bodied Merlot. This is very good. — 2 days ago
