This was the first bottle of burgundy I bought just under five years ago. Didn’t know much about the producer, vintage, region or vineyard, I just knew it was time to start adding a few to check on in later years. Glad I did!

Alongside this was a 2002 Piper Rare, 2008 SQN The Duel Grenache and a 1989 Beychevelle, paired with Braised Texas Iberico Ossobuco…and shockingly, all worked with the dish.

While we decanted the other reds, we pulled the cork and let this sit in the bottle for 30mins or so before pouring. Dark crimson in the glass with some translucence. Aromatics of cedar, herb crusted black cherries, raspberries and dark floral notes…not shy. The first half of the bottle showed a very pretty/elegant profile with nervy acidity, and then this absolutely transformed to a more complex and filled-out wine…black peppercorn, clay/earth with some iron at the finish that persisted for a good while.

Drinking really well now, and likely reaching peak enjoyment for those who enjoy their burgs with a balanced fruit and secondary profile.

Sounds amazing!

Dom Pérignon

Brut Champagne Rosé 2005

The colour of pink copper. Consistent fine bead with aromas of strawberry, honey dew melon, hint of beeswax. 100% Pinot Noir. As Jancis commented “like a Volnay in its perfume and delicacy but as substantial as fine red burgundy “. Could not see the point in further cellaring given how good this is now and already 17 years old, even if the window by JR is to 2027. A combination celebration of wedding anniversary and farewell to the children returning overseas. It’s all happening!! PS The photo shows the back light on turned on with a switch in the punt of the bottle giving a sexy pink glow. Obviously aimed at the dimly lit night club scene where it would definitely enhance sales. — 3 months ago

Ha Ha Severn. I need a good memory to remember the last time I was in a night club. My kids helped me with that line. 😎

Savannah Special Reserve Verdelho Madeira

From an old bottle released 10+ years ago not so. Plenty to love if a little tired, lots of flavor just lost a little of that acid snap! — 15 days ago

Sterling Vineyards

Reserve Napa Valley Merlot 2001

Nose has plum skin, crushed blackberry, spring violets, cedar shavings, chocolate powder and dry leaves.

Palate has roasted sweet red pepper, dehydrated blueberries, chocolate covered prune, over-ripe plum with faded tannins. Patience always wins.

Cork pulled for slow oxidation at 6H, then 2H decant. Noted improvement as the bottle airs, still lots of life ahead.

A perfect finale to our older Sterling Merlot's, just one remains, an older obscenely large format bottle. We sold off almost all our Sterling collection (Cabernet) earlier this year, I'm meh about the transaction, but we were can't drink it all. Someone will be quite happy, aside from us.

Paired to medium-rare strip steaks (Kinderhook Farm, Valatie NY) and roasted vegetables with bacon. Satisfying.

Sea Floored Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir 2018

A very nice Pinot Noir from Santa Rita Hills.

Medium bodied with medium acidity.

Showing red fruits with earth, vegetables, spices, herbs, coffee and black pepper.

Tangy and interesting. Green and a little bitter. A good quality wine, though.

Very fruity right out of the bottle, and gets earthier as it opens up (90 minutes).

Will continue to age nicely in the next 5 to 7 years.

Aged in French oak barrels for 15 months.

13.9% alcohol by volume.

90 points.

$45.
