Selección Especial Rioja Tempranillo 2016

Ok it is finally here - the wine nerd herd 5 year reunion has started - in 2016 - the herd met in NYC - there were amazing bonds and friendships developed and are intact to this day and growing
Initially there was @Carl Fischer @Ron R @Joe Lucca @David L as well as myself @Mike R and one other who had such a blast we have decided to this get together as a herd frequently and for most part we have been United and strong even doing zoom tastings whenever
Not long after the initial conclave in 2016 we traveled and expanded to include @Bill Bender @Shawn R @Eric L and our newest and a true foundation of youth and knowledge @Shay A and we have been to Palm Beach, Raleigh, San Diego, San Antonio, Des Moines, Paso Robles and now back to the starting place - NYC - 5 years later
Get ready New York as the herd is running hard and with purpose in the city that never sleeps
The picture / posting are two tune up tastings last Saturday with locals in Raleigh as I need practice a) red wines below 50 and b) red wines above 100
Standout to me was the Muga in the less than 50 and in the over 100 - all were good but Paul Hobbs, myriad, switchback ridge, Pulido walker
Of course the krug and aubert were good but maybe not able to keep up
The carnival of love and Don Melchor were delicious as well but were not equivalent to the Napa cabs that are all world class vineyards and winemakers
Again I say all this to say training is over and let the games begin in NYC as we have landed
Thank you @Ron R and @Carl Fischer for hosting the herd and I am stoked

Pretty sure I got ambushed by you and the gang on a Cheval-Blanc bender (no participant pun intended) Insane Diego. It was a great night.

Viña Tondonia Gran Reserva Rioja Blanco Malvasia Viura 2006

Old School Spanish Blanco

So spectacular b/c it’s many flavors of fruit, herbs and minerality fade in/out with each sniff/sip. Complex & ephemeral
Not everyone likes the oxidative notes and savory elements

DAY1
Served with Vinloq System and immediate fireworks
👃Honey, wax, and herbs like dill etc
👅Citrus, pear, with nuttiness. Flavors are dynamic and varied

Stored in fridge under Vinloq Preservation
Forgot about it actually…

DAY24
Outstanding again
The leading flavors of lemon, honey with that nice nuttiness are there again. So is the prominent waxiness that shrouds those ghost-like flavors
No signs of deterioration as the fruit and intensity of the flavors are still there in spades

Reserve Bingham Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon 2003

Tastes way younger than 16 years from the vintage. Quite dark and extracted flavor that kept opening up. Has many years of life left. A complement to the entire evening. Top flight Napa Cabernet. — 4 years ago

Viña Tondonia Gran Reserva Rioja Tempranillo Blend 1995

Popped and poured; consumed over two days. My second time enjoying the 1995 Gran Reserva (the most recent release from LdH). The wine pours garnet with a translucent core accompanied by some fine sediment and a slightly watery rim. Medium viscosity. On the nose, high intensity and seems to have some VA. There’s also a little bit of the funk too. Highly perfumed with cherry, red rope licorice, balsamic, cumin, horse saddle, dill, and iron rich earth. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium tannin and medium++ acid. Tart cherries and again with the red rope licorice. Also, there are blackberries and plums, buzz buttons, iron, tomato, leather, olives and exotic spices. Long, savory finish. Despite being 26 years from vintage, the wine comes across super bright and fresh. Just lovely. — 2 years ago

B Cellars

Blend 24 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2016

B cellars blend flight. 24 v 25 v 26 v 27.

All are very good. The 2014 26 is the clear favorite but the rest were neck and neck for 2nd. The 26 is a no-brainer for under 100 bucks. The blend 24 is a great pop n pour wine but it’s getting expensive at 70 bucks now. It used to be a fun substitute for a cab but now the price is making other wines better options (hell there are some great cabs out there for less now). I’ve been liking the blend 25 for recent vintages. I used to think the syrah and cab blend took away their respective qualities, but this works. These wines are all solid.

@Paul Treadway Huntington Beacher Bum haha ya it’s the girlfriend’s favorite winery. We got a lot of B cellars. I think we’ll be opening up some 14 BTK soon. Very cool that you got the big bottles for that.
