Ribbon Ridge Winery

Ridgecrest Vineyards Pinot Noir

Beautiful 20 year old Oregon Pinot. Opened, re-corked, then enjoyed an hour later over the next 6 hours. Slightly clunky at first but expressed good integration after the first hour. Evolved gradually and subtly. Dried strawberries gave way to raspberry preserves and then sour cherry. Medicinal and sage notes gave way to lavender and rose then cigar/cigar box then smoky bacon and finally black tea. No real awkward phases. Likely drinking at or near peak now. — 10 days ago

Domaine Ghislaine Barthod

Les Fuées Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Pinot Noir 2005

Still incredibly youthful yet also one of the more open and accessible 05’s I’ve had. It’s gorgeous tonight in every way showing just how special the Fuées terroir and its 70+ year old vines are. It’s dark fruited, elegant and expansive, and also structured with fine grained tannins and incredible depth and balance to its layered fruit, florals, spice and minerality. Its finish just keeps on lingering. Fabulous bottle. — 8 months ago

Enderle & Moll

Spätburgunder Rosé 2020

In the hottest summer since forever, Enderle & Moll Spat rose is the solution to my Texas problem. This works for when I want red and red doesn't want to work. It's the heart and soul of German Spat with the ability to quench thirst. A cool dip off Liason, with more texture and thicker concentration.

It doesn't look like Rose'. It looks like 20 year old Barolo - crimson with browned edges. Awesome cherry laden notes. Fresh bing - dark to stain your fingers. And candied cherry too - like Ludens cough drops. And mint and menthol. And that texture - this is 13.5% ABV, but not syrupy the way Bandol rose's can be.

It's own exceptional thing. Drink at cellar temp.

Sicilia Il Frappato 2020

Delectable Wine
9.3

More like a spiced herbal tea than wine in the glass, the 2020 Il Frappato wafts up with a smoky mix of dusty rose, sage, allspice and crushed ashen stone. This is pure and delicate in feel, with a salty flourish up front that gives way to citrus-tinged wild berries and red plums. It leaves the palate completely refreshed, tapering off with a staining of liquid inner florals and licorice nuances. While I don’t see the 2020 making old bones, it would benefit from a short stay in the cellar to help unlock more of its aromatic profile. It’s an understated beauty. Mariscal

El Miracle Valencia Old Vine Garnacha Tintorera 2019

Eye catching label. Heavy, dense bottle. Lots of medals and awards. This has a lot of style before you even open the cork. Pretty color of under-ripe black cherries. Aroma is strange. Not much fruit. Bit of dust or ground rocks. Also like a plaster of Paris or freshly painted room smell (but not in a bad way). Quite floral. Tea Roses. Flavor is very Spanish. Dry and woody. Cedar? Plenty of minerality. Just a touch of cherry juice. Plenty of biting bittersweetness. It’s a nice Granacha example to show the unique flavors of this French grape that rocks in Spain. Great bottle of wine. — a year ago

Produttori del Barbaresco

Barbaresco Nebbiolo 2008

Darker colors with a hint of rust. Smells of herbs and hams. And wood oil. Flavors are dry as a cork. Deep herbal streak. So tart, so austere. But pleasing. It’s confusing, still evolving. Nothing new world here. Old school all the way. — 3 years ago

Château Cos d'Estournel

Saint-Estèphe Red Bordeaux Blend 2012

Decant of 6 hours but this still needed time in the glass to slowly evolve. At the start saline and soy sauce that gave way to dark fruits. At 10 years old this is still a baby that will develop but already so much to enjoy. — a year ago

Crozes-Hermitage Syrah 2011

Classic N.Rhône is every way. Beef jerky, black pepper, olive, bright red and black fruit. Bought this 11 year old widely available CH on a lark and taco night was elevated. Great luck. — 2 years ago

Movia

Sauvignon 2015

Tasted double-blind. The 2015 Movia is a departure from the typical Sauvignon Blanc experience. This becomes immediately apparent when presented in the glass; showing a hazy golden color that makes me believe this bottle has seen 10-15 years of cellar age. On the nose, I was reaffirmed that this bottle was likely quite old as it was showing notes of canned peaches, butterscotch and sherry-like notes. On the palate, marmalade and cashews. The high acid of the wine was holding everything together. It turned out that this wasn’t all that old, rather made in a more oxidative style. Charming in its own unique way…I really dig this! — 3 years ago
