This was a real treat to enjoy courtesy of @Bryan Kesting being in town, and since we both share an affinity for Antica Terra wines, he was kind enough to bring a 2012 Antikythera.
In the past month, I’ve had the 2012, 2015 and 2017, and this 2012 shows just how incredible these wines can age. I would say this is probably the most impressive OR Pinot I’ve had to date. So much balance here. On the nose, it is quite expressive with potpourri/red and purple floral notes and herb crusted black cherries. The palate is supremely balanced between the herbal/earth/clay like notes encapsulated by underripe red and black fruits and a kiss of sweetness...kirsch like? The core here nods to burgundy with structure. While I don’t think this gets any better, I do think it will cruise for years and evolve in to a somewhat different wine. Thanks again @Bryan Kesting for opening this! — 2 days ago
Pop and pour yesterday. Notes from day 2 open. On the nose: soft smoke and chalk, apple, lemon, a hint of reduction...lovely nose. On the palate: chalk, sour apple, lemon, loads of wet stone...fantastic acidity and good density...maybe my favorite incarnation of this wine so far... — 9 days ago
Sandhi, Sanford & Benedict, Sta. Rita Hills, Pinot Noir, 2016, ABV 13.5%.
This Pinot Noir comes from the Sta. Rita Hills AVA of Santa Barbara County in the Central Coast region of California. Despite California having generally a Mediterranean climate, due to its westerly location, Sta. Rita Hills AVA receives cooling maritime and fog influences from the Pacific Ocean, aiding in the preservation of acidity, lending balance, finesse, and elegance to the resulting wine.
This wine is medium ruby with a medium(+) intensity of youthful aromas. The aromas include primary notes of candied cherry, strawberry rhubarb, orange peel, violet, tulip, mint, wet stone, white pepper, secondary notes of nutmeg, and tertiary notes of earth and wet leaves.
On the palate this wine is dry, with medium(+) acidity, a medium body, medium alcohol, delicate tannin, and medium(+) intensity in flavors consistent with the nose. This wine has a medium(+) finish.
This is a beautiful wine with a strong fruit character and expression. It is well-balanced and offers concentrated aromatics and flavors and nice complexity. — 12 days ago
Paul Lato Atticus John Sebastiano Vineyard Pinot Noir 2016: Bright elegance. Fine balance. Perfect structure. Nice primary fruit flavors of strawberry, cherry & blackberry, followed by some secondary flavors of vanilla & spice. The finish was soft & silky, leaving you with the desire for another sip! Overall, a high quality Pinot, leaving me beyond impressed. Hands down, the best California Pinot Noir I have tasted this year. Great weekend to all! Cheers🍷 — 16 days ago
Will follow over a few days. Pop and pour, 1 hr slow ox. On the nose: lovely black cherry, some soft notes of stem inclusion, with loads of savory character and dry leafy notes. On the palate: fantastic acidity, with loads of earthy red fruit, some asian spice...good density, and very lightweight, with some very soft grapeseed and spice notes on the finish. Well balanced, delicate and so yummy. @James Sparks the hits keep coming! — 2 days ago
Fantastic chardonnay from Greg Brewer that is only going to get better and better with more time in the bottle. A perfect match for a spectacular day in Eagle Harbor on Lake Superior…and even better to celebrate Vanessa’s paper being accepted for publication today! 🥳 — 4 days ago
2014 Vintage. 16% Alcohol. Needs a bit more time but extremely enjoyable. First time we’ve seen a white wax seal on any SQN. Part of Gail’s birthday celebration. With black truffles on house made fettuccine at Il Cortile in Paso Robles. First wine from that wooden six pack. After a day of tastings at Torrin, McPrice Meyers, Fulldraw, Booker and Benom, had to be a special bottle to stand out! Paso rocks! — 13 days ago
