Vina Belje

Graševina

A fabulous find!! Grasevina is a dry, fresh, aromatic white wine with apple-like notes. It’s typically considered to be a neutral and easy-drinking wine. The everyday wine of Central Europe, Grasevina is also known as Welschriesling. Recognizable features of the grape are its acid and slight almond-like bitterness. Belje began in 1697 when Roman Emperor Leopold gifted the estate to Prince Eugene of Savoy. The wine is straw yellow with hints of light green. The wine itself is beautifully fruity and flowery, fresh and crisp acidity that resembles citrus with the slightest hint of sweetness. This wine is well balanced, finishes with a beautiful orange peel note and a nice bite. An exceptional food-friendly wine that is unfairly overlooked and underappreciated.  Surdyks March 2023 $13.99 (Reg $16.99) — a year ago

Grüner Silvaner Leopold trocken 2019

Lyle Fass
9.3

Nose is a bit quiet. Some wet stones but surprisingly quiet. Maybe too cold? Palate is electric. Wow. Just a big zing of fresh mouthwatering minerals. Really long. Really closed. Unusual for it to be this closed but it’s all there. Needs to come together! Some sugar snap peas and florals with coaxing. Really long and mouthcoating. So pure and energetic. Wow. Really great. I’ll be back.

Really coming around now. Expansive and herbal aromas. Floral and so delicate. Ripe, juicy, long. Salty. Great structure.

Quinta da Palmirinha

Tinto Loureiro

Bought this at Leopold in Lisbon after trying it on the tasting menu. Very funky bio dynamic that I love. Our waitress said it’s not popular in Portugal but Americans and canadiens love it. — 6 years ago

Crooked Stave

Nightmare on Brett Dark Sour Ale Aged in Leopold Bros Whiskey Barrels

This is stunning. Tart cherries with a touch of nutmeg. Deeply oxidized but well balanced with its acidity and oaky tannins. Caramel coming through as the initial carbonation subsides. Closest comparison is Cuvée Freddy, and while that beer is great, this is better. Ready to drink right after pouring, and I suspect it will improve with some time and warming. — 6 years ago

Reserve Leopold Grüner Veltliner 2016

Gruner isn’t my jam, but this is pretty good. Nose has citrus pith, clean mountain stream, crushed rock, green apple. Dry and with the characteristic Gruner peppery note, it’s clean and crisp, with a bit of tingly bitterness that lingers. — 3 years ago
