It’s not the 1999, but this is pretty darn good! — 7 days ago
Same rating as last time. Obviously Dom from 2004 is fun but this is a bit too austere for my taste. Simply does not hit every part of the palate in a meaningful way. Perfect bubbles and great yeast / toasty notes but lacking acid and a full mouthfeel. Still excellent but not at the level you’d expect. — a day ago
My notes from last year still on point:
Fuller bodied and softer than last try, smoky and light minerals over gentle cedary wood and dark cherry. A mature wine with enough gritty tannin to go a long way.
Still that same strange white sediment.
This still has 2-3 years easily. — 10 days ago
Amazingly complex and like nothing I’ve had before. Almost no fruit on the nose or palate. Funky, leathery, salty, and smoky. Tannins are present and well integrated. Closest reference would be a Bordeaux blend. Awesome wine. — 14 days ago
Probably my surprise of the night. Would have never guessed it was 14yrs young. Very youthful. Deep red in the glass with explosive aromatics full of rhubarb pie, lingonberry, black tea and nutmeg. Nice acidity carrying this. Secondary notes of sandalwood, herbal spice and tar. — a day ago
Impressions after initial decant were aromas of strawberry and other red fruits which is unusual for an aged Red Burgundy. This fruity note blew off after an hour. Some stalkiness and spiciness on palate. Barb said aromas of root vegetables like turnip. Light to medium weight which I have come to expect from Volnay particularly in an average vintage like 2004. This is the Clos des Chenes. Would love to try from a better year. — 14 days ago
Another Wednesday Wine Committee lunch, this time hosted by my buddy @Will Adams ! As always, all wines are tasted blind.
Not familiar with this producer. Color has faded with a good amount of bricking. Aromatically, it smelled “hot” and ripe. Lots of dark fruit here. My guess was older Cali zin. As you can see, swing and a miss. Surprised at how fruity/jammy this was for its age. — 4 days ago
Nice young light gold color. Great nose. Notes of lemon, apricot, dusty earth, minerals and some brown spice. Very rich in the mouth and fruit forward, especially for the vintage. Soft acidity. Great mouth feel and finish. Bottles like this could easily last 10 more years. — 4 days ago
