It’s not the 1999, but this is pretty darn good! — 7 days ago

Dom Pérignon

Metamorphosis by Iris Van Herpen Champagne Blend 2004

Same rating as last time. Obviously Dom from 2004 is fun but this is a bit too austere for my taste. Simply does not hit every part of the palate in a meaningful way. Perfect bubbles and great yeast / toasty notes but lacking acid and a full mouthfeel. Still excellent but not at the level you’d expect. — a day ago

PS Brunello di Montalcino Sangiovese 2004

My notes from last year still on point:
Fuller bodied and softer than last try, smoky and light minerals over gentle cedary wood and dark cherry. A mature wine with enough gritty tannin to go a long way.
Still that same strange white sediment.
This still has 2-3 years easily.

Barolo Nebbiolo 2004

Red fruit, fall leaves, sweet and not showing a lot of structure at first, though incredibly fine tannin comes out with air. It is very easy to drink. — 8 days ago

Oikonomoy Crete Liatiko 2004

Amazingly complex and like nothing I’ve had before. Almost no fruit on the nose or palate. Funky, leathery, salty, and smoky. Tannins are present and well integrated. Closest reference would be a Bordeaux blend. Awesome wine. — 14 days ago

Moonshine Ranch Pinot Noir 2004

Probably my surprise of the night. Would have never guessed it was 14yrs young. Very youthful. Deep red in the glass with explosive aromatics full of rhubarb pie, lingonberry, black tea and nutmeg. Nice acidity carrying this. Secondary notes of sandalwood, herbal spice and tar. — a day ago

For me, this was a great aged Pinot. The nose was very herbal with aged raspberry. Has perhaps lost a bit of its elegance but did gain some heft as it opened. Minerality and shale. Finished very well and longer than I expected. Really a nice bottle of wine from Dan! Scores of those one at this point will be all over the place as there are those who love the sweeter youthful side of Pinot and those who like this side.

Domaine Michel Lafarge

Volnay Pinot Noir 2004

Impressions after initial decant were aromas of strawberry and other red fruits which is unusual for an aged Red Burgundy. This fruity note blew off after an hour. Some stalkiness and spiciness on palate. Barb said aromas of root vegetables like turnip. Light to medium weight which I have come to expect from Volnay particularly in an average vintage like 2004. This is the Clos des Chenes. Would love to try from a better year. — 14 days ago

Another Wednesday Wine Committee lunch, this time hosted by my buddy @Will Adams ! As always, all wines are tasted blind.

Not familiar with this producer. Color has faded with a good amount of bricking. Aromatically, it smelled “hot” and ripe. Lots of dark fruit here. My guess was older Cali zin. As you can see, swing and a miss. Surprised at how fruity/jammy this was for its age.

Clos de la Truffière Les Chaumées Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Chardonnay 2004

Nice young light gold color. Great nose. Notes of lemon, apricot, dusty earth, minerals and some brown spice. Very rich in the mouth and fruit forward, especially for the vintage. Soft acidity. Great mouth feel and finish. Bottles like this could easily last 10 more years. — 4 days ago

Estate Grown Cave Fermented Napa Valley Cabernet Franc 2004

Dark purple in color with nice long legs in the glass. This wine is dead sexy. Notes of lilac and black plum. Layers of cooked fruit and leather. Med firm tannins. As the wine opens, the dustier it becomes. — 9 days ago
