Te Mata Estate

Bullnose Hawkes Bay Syrah 2015

Pardon the water damaged label. Aromas of pepper, spice and fresh garden herbs. Almost like the garrigue aromas you get from a Southern Rhone red. Medium weight palate but M+ Intensity. Even though Hawkes Bay is home to probably New Zealand’s best Cabernets like Te Mata Coleraine it also produces excellent cool climate Syrah like this one. Not so special with Pinot Noir here which is grown by a few optimistic producers. Had another bottle on 7th February 2024 with similar notes. I love the pepper but it does need more mid palate fruit. I have a couple of bottles left. I can’t see the need for extended cellaring and will probably drink these in the next 12 to 18 months. — 2 years ago

Te Mata Estate

Awatea Hawke's Bay Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2009

Muted nose, blackberry aromas and other Cabernet notes. Medium weight - a detuned version of the premium Cuvée, Coleraine - New Zealand's best Cabernet producer IMO. A lovely Cabernet blend but I can't see the point of extended cellaring. Tasted 61 weeks later with consistent notes. Certainly no need to cellar any further. — 7 years ago

Te Mata Estate

Coleraine Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot 2006

Kiwi claret. Can compare to a modern style classified growth Bordeaux or a Super Tuscan. 2006 and could last another decade. Nice depth and length of flavour with good acidity. Purchased at the winery in Hawkes Bay. — 8 years ago

Te Mata Estate

Hawkes Bay Cabernet Merlot 2014

2014: Now we are in the presence of royalty so mind your P's and Qs. Te Mata 'reputedly' make the best NZ red in Coleraine and this is the little brother's er little brother. It is beetroot red showing it is as fresh as a daisy. But the taste is already exceptional for the year and the price at $22. No cab sav grassy rebellion and no merlot tart it is refined, low acid low sweetness. Like the All Blacks No. 10 we obviously have depth in numbers and age. It is a delight to drink and will surely improve. I like it — 9 years ago
