Assmannshausen Pinot Noir 2014

Lyle Fass

Gorgeous nose of sour cherries, early season cherries and gorgeous deep minerality. The perfect 50/50 mix of cherries and almost chalky/limestone minerality. Floral as well. So clean, deep and penetrative. Palate is balanced and so so pure. Gorgeous acid and mouthfeel with teeming cherry fruit. So barely sweet and outrageous finesse and depth. Pitter patter of a finish that melts on your palate. Wow. Finish is terrific. Sappy and generous. Also the crazy superb intense minerality on the palate. Still has terrific structure and is teeming with energy and minerals. Almost a clay like mouthfeel in the finish. This will slowly unfurl like the rest of the Chat Sauvage wines. Brilliant in such a subtle way. The wine stays with you on the finish. Concentration and depth pick up with air. Between 9.3/9.4 for now. More like 9.35999999. — 17 days ago

Rüdesheim Pinot Noir 2017

Lyle Fass

Deep nose then very perfumed with sappy mid season cherries. Superbly mineral and elegant. Precise. Airy and my god this is mineral. Palate is elegant, taut and structured with lovely purity. Sour cherry and early season cherry dominate and it’s very tangy with lovely crunch. Nice inner mouth aromas and juiciness. Seems a bit closed on the backend where the tannins firm up and show intense stoney mineralIty. They are very fine tannins tho. Needs at least an hour of air or maybe more. This and the wine before have terrific structure. Long finish that has sweet fruit and tang. Fleshes out with air and the finish is even more expansive. 9.2 to 9.3. Engaging, full of energy and freshness. Terrific balance and mouthfeel. — 24 days ago

Lorch Pinot Noir 2016

Lyle Fass

Super fragrant nose lifted by spice, mint, haunting earth notes, stunning minerality, and a wicked pissah sense of place. Tart cherries and constantly unfurling stoney minerality capture the olfactory senses. Ripe and balanced with juicy fruit with ripe tannins and juicy mid season cherry fruit on the back end. Really lingers. Terrific concentration and again that just absurd mineral energy that comes through with some air on all of these Chat Sauvage wines. Nose opens up more and becomes increasingly complex. Man these are the ultimate burg ringers. Such a nice finish. Glides. Terrific lithe and elegant tannins. I’m sure my rating will increase with air. — 17 days ago

Rheingau Selection Schulz Pinot Noir 2017

Lyle Fass

Deep, ephemeral nose. Some flint and matchstick as well. Superbly mineral as all these wines are it seems. Perfumed cherry and cherry flower. Very very aromatic and intense. Really expressive of the place. So chalky and mineral. Some funk as well. Will blow off it seems. Palate is silky and sweet with tremendous grip and structure. Deep and dense with awesome mouthfeel and structure with a deep and tangy finish. Great purity. Chalky finish. Genius depth on the mid palate and moves into a very long finish. Elegant and airy but also substantial. Terrific. So complete and complex. Has structure to age 15 years. Needs 3-5. A serious Pinot. Wowza. After air this smells like high class Vosne Romanee but with a Rheingau twist. Serious aromas. Floral, berry expansive and deep. Palate is so nimble and has that red Riesling thing big time. Gorgeous. — 24 days ago

Le Schulz Pinot Noir 2017

Lyle Fass

@Delectable Wine this is the “Pinot Noir Le Schulz.” Thanks!

Slowly unfurling nose of herbs, sour cherry, stone and incredible mineral complexity. This is my 4th Chat Sauvage 17 and these maybe the most mineral German pinots I’ve ever had. They also take a very long time to open and unfurl. Deep and stoney and slowly a perfume develops. Palate is superb. Wow. Elegant, concentrated and saturating. Early season and sour cherries abound on a bed of crushed rock dust. Dry and chalky tannins but are intermingled with terrific fruit. Sweet and high quality tannins and such terrific freshness. Wow. This is sick. Such a seriousness to it. What a long finish. So refined and fine. This is top class stuff. Wow the nose gets going after 15-20 minutes. Amazing perfume. A baby now and will surely improve over a decade. So deep. This is superb and has impressed me. Almost a 9.6 and I am not ruling it out.

Rheingau Pinot Noir 2017

Lyle Fass

Nose of earth and extreme mineral. Cooling red fruits. Some cranberry and sour cherry. Very clean. Palate is gorgeous. Ethereal and textured with sour cherry fruit and wonderful haunting texture and than energy, minerals and freshness next to the that texture. Terrific mouthfeel and inner mouth aromas. Really complex and sappy. Like a great Bourgogne Rouge. Terrific mineral and tangy red fruit persistence. Rustic and charming. Terrific balance. 9.1 but could be 9.2 with more air. As this airs. It firmly goes to a 9.2 as the fruit becomes more expansive and deep. The structure is there but it fleshes out.

After air nose is more tangy and expansive. Loads of spice as well. Superbly juicy and fresh.
