Spring Mountain District Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

Time for my #FridayCabernetfix. Here is a big boy from Napa Valley.

Pretty color of dark ruby/ Inky with a short reddish rim.

Fruity nose of blackberries, black currants, black plums, licorice, cedar, vanilla, tobacco, chocolates, green olives, coffee, earth, vegetables, light bell pepper, black pepper and spices.

Full-bodied, smooth and elegant, with medium acidity and long legs.

Dry on the palate with plums, black currants, coffee, oak, cloves, earth, vegetables, graphite, spices, olives, bitter herbs, chocolates, bell pepper, licorice, tobacco, pencil lead, peppercorn and dark coffee.

Medium plus on the finish with firm tannins and tangy raspberries.

This is a delicious Napa Cabernet from Spring Mountain. Still young and needs 5 to 10 years in the bottle to mature.

Showing lots of earth and vegetable notes at this point. Nicely balanced with nice complexity and a nice mouthfeel.

Needs a long time to open up. I gave it 3 hours and I'm sure it's not enough, as the tannins just showed up.

This Single Vineyard feels like a young Left Bank Bordeaux. This three-year-old has a good potential to become a 95 point star. Already tasty and delicious.

Good by itself or with food. I paired it with meats and cheeses.

Grapes are grown at 1,800 feet elevation. Aged for 26 months in French Oak barrels (100% new). A very small production of only 600 bottles, numbered. This is bottle number 560.

14.5% alcohol by volume.

Anthology Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Blend 2012

Had this three years ago, aged well. Conn Creek is a boutique winery on the Silverado Trail in the Rutherford district headed by winemaker Mike McGrath. A blend of 75% Cab Sauv, 16% Cab Franc, 4% Merlot, 3% Malbec and 2% Petit Verdot. Deep Ruby with aromas of ripe fruit and earthy oak notes. On the palate ripe blackberry and raspberry flavors with espresso and tobacco tones with fine well integrated tannins. Long finish ending with cedar, cacao and earthy tobacco. Aged well still has room for more. Nice! — 5 months ago

This is the Fûtile cuvée. Reductive to start off. Needs some 20 min air to shine, and it does! Low dosage of 1g. Wood is well integrated now. Bought this at the domaine some two/three years ago. Not aware of dégorgement date but at least 2-3 years ago. — 11 days ago

pop n pour. three cycles in the 90 minutes it lasted. 1) excellent nose, soft yet bright, what one hopes for with barbaresco. 2) muted out, nose faded. mouth faded, thinking it too old and ordinary:-( 3) rebirth, nose back and rhymes with stage 1. Yet, deeper this go. fruit there but fainter as second/third characteristics start to show. sadly, not a magnum so unable to report further. More study required;-) — 3 months ago

Wow. This stopped me in my tracks. Nose of chestnut, spice, tar, roses, no fruit. So deep. But this is just opened and I know this is gonna be mind bending in an hour or three. The florals are so crazy and man o man the beautiful high end tobacco and endless flowers is something to behold! Wow! So much spice and old library book with hints of freshly cleaned and a once used chimney and a freshly burned out fire. This nose is layered and so deep and keeps revealing itself. 9.7 on the nose. Palate is brilliant. Hints of opulence abound but this has daggers and angles for days with ridiculous freshness and finesse. Just incredible. Massive concentration and huge minerality. Velvety and substantial tannins and very long. Like one sip is a 3 minute experience. Explosive like nothing else. This is regal and the best Barbaresco I’ve had in years. What energy and freshness on the palate. No hard edges. Complex, deep and so concentrated. This has some slight brambly cherry fruit but if this is like the Primanebbia this will take 3 hours or longer for the fruit to be truly expressive. Long. Just so damn impressive.

Now after air this is just insane. This airiness one associated with whites wines. Palate has now insane mega fruit that is so juicy, so dense and so impressive you cannot believe all the tannin from the first hour has been transformed into gorgeous cherry fruit with insanely detailed silky tannins. Wow. So ethereal. 9.7 to 9.8.

Taste seemed like it had a slight spicy bite to it. It is okay chilled at 56 degrees and keeps its flavor as it warms. BUT it’s flavor exploded to fantastic when paired with chili!! — 2 months ago


Sonoma County Pinot Noir 1974


Astonishing that this very old wine is drinking just great! The ‘74 Cab from Souverain was my very first early favorite way back then. Got this single sample and figured must be vinegar by now but be good for nostalgia for the long gone vineyard. Instead this is a delightful shock! Labels look great. Cork has top layer of crap but in good shape though the very bottom broke off. Wine has nice garnet color with little hint of its age. Still lively, well balanced and tasty even if not super complex. Nose is just straight out attractive with very ripe dark red fruits as background for the foreground earth and field and hay. No way I’d have guessed 46 year old Sonoma Pinot! Kept sniffing and satisfied even before tasting. Palate is light and lean but still lively and texture is firm and acidic carrying over to good finish. Like an aged but still athletic and elegant ballerina showing off. What a pleasant and memorable shock in these crazy times! Lot of 4 oldies from 70s, Sutter Home Zinfandels (2) Montevino and primarily for these but this Pinot already made it worthwhile for AA20. Adding two to 9.3 for the age! Back label says ‘74 was great vintage and wine ready to drink but will still be good in 3-4 years with proper storage. Ha! Day two still standing strong in Eto and dancing with delight. Enough for one last glass in day or two. Day three drank without food before dinner. Kept sniffing and sniffing. Elegant and complex nose with notes of sour plum and very ripe dark fruits. Only possible in such well aged vino! Memorable. Too bad only bottle. — 18 days ago
