Sierra Foothills, California

Sabon Estate

Rocky Top Amador County Zinfandel 2018

Ah Sobon Zin. The good stuff. This has some lovely cherry and berry aromas. With a bit of cut wood and nice smelling pipes. Flavor a a hint hot with a brandy/port streak, but that doesn’t detract from things because the fruit and zip is also there. Plenty to chew on and savor. This is jammy, classic foothills stuff. Full flavored and robust. Quite tasty too. — 4 days ago

Edmunds St. John

Bone-Jolly El Dorado County Gamay Noir

Light ruby color. Served this slightly chilled. Currants and figs on the nose. I’d say medium acidity. Tart raspberry, tart cherry on the palate. More currants on the palate as it warms up.. I’m not sure if this is supposed to be a rosé or not. But it’s yummy for early evening drinking on the deck. Thumbs up. — 7 days ago

Keplinger

Caldera El Dorado Mourvedre Blend 2010

1/2 hour decant (little cloudy sediment). A formidable dark tawny red color with decent bricking. On the nose: subtle nose of stewed meat, iron, cherry, smoke, and herbs. Taste: A creamy, smooth medium plus body wine with mouth coating raspberry, minerals, tar, leather, little chocolate, and a smokey tobacco medium plus finish. Drink em now or over the next few years. Cheers! — 13 days ago

Estate Bottled North Yuba Cabernet Sauvignon 1999

Interesting...
This bottle was off dry. But in a really nice way.

Not sure what happened. The other renaissance wines we've had were definitely dry, a lot of variance bottle to bottle though.

Pretty ruby with brown showing thru the edges. Red spiced fruit and that mild sweetness. Barely noticeable tannins.

Caleb Leisure Wines

Mother Knows Marsanne Roussanne

2019 huge tannin, definitely georgian inspired but w marsanne of all things! Big tannins with a warm, sunny depth. Grippy savory sour notes but free of any neggie hairspray smells/flavors of some younger Georgian heavy skin contact cuvees. Really cool and well executed quervi wine in CA! Love it! Had “Mother Knows” once before maybe 2018, and recall it as a more oxidized jura/sherry adjacent take on marsanne... Regardless the style I appreciate the lithe, clean, dryness Caleb achieves on some big, wild, engaging flavors. — a month ago
